BAR-ILAN UNIVERSITY was named after the late Rabbi Meir Bar-
Ilan, leader of the World- MiZrachi Movement.

Its Founder and first President was the late Dr. Pinchas Churgin,
of New - York, who dedicated the'latter part of his life to the creation of
religiously-oriented university in Israel.

The University was formally inaugurated in 1955, and its first. Grad-
uation Excercises took place in 1959.

Aim and. purpose—The aim of the University is to raise a genera
of Jewish scholars and scientists, who are familiar with the teachings and
traditions of Judaism and imbued with the spirit of the Torah. It is intended
to serve as a training ground for future community leaders the world over
and as a cultural and spiritual bridge uniting Israel with Jewry in the
Diaspora.
