Louis Tabak, former president

HOLYOKE, Mass. (JTA) — The
home of a newspaper publisher
was ransacked_ here this weekend,
and swastikas were carved on fur-
niture and walls, after the paper
had denounced the desecration of
a local synagogue and an attempt
to burn it down.
The attack was made on the
home of William Dwight, Sr., pub-
lisher of the Holyoke Transcript-
Telegram. Dwight is not Jewish.
In the attack at the synagogue,
Torah scrolls had been torn, other
Jewish religious objects had been
strewn on the floor, and a fire had
been started in a closet. The blaze
was extinguished quickly.
In a statement telephoned from
Miami, where he was vacationing,
Dwight once more denounced the
attack against the synagogue, de-
claring: "The desecration of the
synagogue indicates there may be
an element in our society of peo-
ple with evil intent. The desecra-
tion of a synagogue or any other
place of worship is a reprehensible
act."

LOUIS TAB AK

one of the City of Hope's four
honorary presidents-for-life.
First elected City of Hope
president in 1946, Tabak was re-
elected in 1957 and again in
1959. In tribute to his leadership,
the City of Hope National bien-
nial convention in July 1961
voted unanimously to confer
upon him the unique title of City
of Hope ambassador-at-large.
His City of Hope identification
is backgrounded in his role as a
founder, and subsequently presi-
dent, of the Merchants Club, a
prominent auxiliary of the Medical
Center within Southern California's
apparel industry.
In this same span of time, he
has been a leader in establishing
Los Angeles as a world fashion
center. The "Tabak of California"
label is a famous one in women's
apparel but its owner, invariably
sought out by fashion editors
around the country on his travels,
inevitably turns such interviews
into opportunities to talk about the
City of Hope.
During his terms of office, the
City of Hope was transformed
from a tuberculosis hospital into
a focal point of the fight against
major catastrophic disease — can-
cer and leukemia, heart, blood and
other chest maladies — and the
100 supporting auxiliaries grew to
more than 400.
