When did the practice of having
Commentaries on the Bible begin?

the text is implied, as primary as
it may be. The second method is
referred to as "Derash." This im-
plies a secondary meaning which
bears out a concept which is not
directly implied by the literal
meaning of the text. The Tal-
mudic literature gives various
means of deriving such meanings
from the text, as for example de-
riving parallel meanings from ob-
serving the exact same word in the
context in which it is used in
another part of the Bible. The
third method is called "Remez"
which means that the text is an
illusion to a totally different mean-
ing, than the literal meaning, the
latter of course also being derived
from the text. The fourth method
is called "Sod" which implies a
secret or allegorical interpretation
which regards the text as symbolic
of a hidden meaning,. usually eso-
teric in nature. This method is
very popular among the Kabbalists
who feel the Scriptures are en-
dowed with mystic significance.

Formal Biblical interpretation is
said to have begun with the acti-
vity of Ezra,-the Scribe in the 5th
Century before the Common Era.
Ezra, finding the Jews who re-
turned from Babylonia to Judea,
as well as those w h o remained
there during the original exile, in
a comparatiVely demoralized state
of affairs, set about to read and
teach the Scriptures to the people.
Thus, it is said, formal commen-
tary to the Bible began. However,
Jewish tradition claims that along
with the written law of the scrip-
tures Moses transmitted an oral
law which gave meaning and appli-
cation to the written law. As a
matter of fact Moses is pictured as
the authority to whom questions
were submitted which, of course,
involved interpretation of the law
and thus its commentary. When
comparing later_books of the Bible
to their earlier counterparts we
find added details and explana-
tions of earlier narratives a n d
laws. This indicates that Commen-

taries to the Bible are perhaps
as old as the Bible itself.
