AJCongress Protests Public School Classes I Held in Synagogue NEW YORK (JTA) — The American Jewish Congress has charged that two suburban school districts, both in Nassau County, were holding public school classes in religious institutions and called on State Education Commissioner James E. Allen to take whatever action is necessary "to preserve the principle of separation of church and state." According to M u r r ay A. Gordon, chairman of the AJC's New York Metropolitan Council, the practice, in violation of con- stitutional guarantees of church- state separation, is being em- ployed in Freeport and Roosevelt, two Long Island communities. In Freeport, he said, the school board was using and paying for space in the First Presbyterian Church. In nearby Roosevelt, he charged, the school board had con- tracted for and was using space in the Jewish Center, a Conserva- tive synagogue. In Freeport, he charged, 200 pupils of the first and second grades were involved, as well as eight teachers. In Roosevelt, ap- proximately 110 public school stu- dents were assigned to classes being held at the Jewish Center. In Freeport, he alleged, the local school board was paying rent totaling $14,400 for nine months. In Roosevelt, he stated, the school board had refused to release any information showing how much it was paying the Jewish Center for use of its space. * * * Dr. David Blum, director of Cong. Bnai Moshe's School of Adult Study, announces registra- tion for adult classes will continue for two more weeks due to a change in curriculum. All classes are held at the synagogue Tues- days, 8:15 and 9:10 p.m. Registra- tion is open to the public. A new class combining Hebrew reading and conversation has been added. In the special lecture series Can- tor Louis Klein will present "The Genesis of Our Liturgy," including the historical and geographical influences and employing illus- trative tapes and records. Rabbi Moses Lehrman, le-atm ing on "The Living Bible," will include an analytical study of Michener's novel "The Source." Seymour Kaplan, director of youth activities, is lecturer on "Basic Jewish Concepts and Cus- toms and Ceremonies." For the reading and writing of Hebrew, there are two courses available, elementary and inter- mediate Hebrew. Quebec to Study Proposal for Better Anti-Bias Laws QUEBEC CITY (JTA) — A brief requesting the provincial govern- ment of Quebec to amend its anti- discrimination legislation by es- tablishing a human rights code and a human rights commission for the prevention of racial, religious and ethnic discrimination has been submitted here by a delegation that included representatives of the Canadian Jewish Congress. The brief, in the name of the United Council for Human Rights, suggested that the amendement in- clude one providing that persons suffering discrimination due to r a c e, ethnic identification or religion be compensated for dam- ages. Also requested was a pro- vision banning publication of discriminatory materials. Paul Gerin-Lajoie, minister of education for Quebec, told the petitioners that improvements could be made in the provincial law against discrimination and said that the provincial cabinet would study the brief. U.S. Approves Loan to Jewish Religious School WASHINGTON (JTA) — The U.S. Office of Education has ap- proved a loan of $11,400 to a new Jewish religious school, the "Yeshiva of the South," at Memp- his. The new institution offers a comprehensive secondary course, grades 9 and 10, and has an en- rollment of 17 students. The loan will be used to purchase science equipment and materials. The loan was made under the National De- fense Education Act, as amended, which provides for loans to non- profit private schools to acquire special equipment and facilities to strengthen education in science, mathematics, modern foreign lan- guages, history, civics, geography, English, or reading. The rate of in- terest is 4 1/4 per cent.
