READING, Pa. (JTA) — New
York State Ku Klux Klan leader
Daniel Burros, 28, shot himself to
death Sunday after the New York
Times revealed his Jewish origin
in an article earlier the same day.
Former national secretary of the
American Nazi Party, and at one
_time or another a member of at
least four Fascist groups advocat-
ing extreme racism against Jews
and Negroes. Burros also was
publisher of a paper, "The Free
Americans," which calls itself "the
battle organ of racial Fascism."

Burros

The paper has referred to Hitler
as the "sacred leader," asserting
that "the ':work begun by the
Master will continue to a victorius
conclusion.
The paper disclosed that Burros'
parents, George Burros, now '71,
and the former Esther Sunshine,
now 62, were married by a cantor
in the Bronx in 1936. The boy,
Daniel, was a `:star pupil" at the
Congregation Talmud Torah, in
the borough of Queens, where he
became bar mitzvah in the con-
gregation's synagogue.
After study at the John Adams
High School, where he was an
honor . pupil with a high IQ, he
served two years in the army
as a paratrooper. He had tried
to enroll in the U.S. Military
Academy at West Point but was
not admitted. His interest in
right-wing movements started at
age 10, and as a teen-ager he
was an apologist for German
Nazism.
Among the Fascist groups to
which Burros has belonged at one
time or another, in addition to
the KKK and the American Nazi
Party, were, the Times reported,
the National Renaissance Party
and the British National Party.
The newspaper stated that he
carried a card identifying him as
a "special agent of the Invisible
Empire" of the Klan. He was
reported to have been arrested
and convicted four times for ex-
tremist activities in Washington
and in New York.
The Times quoted Burros as
saying to a reporter who ques-
tioned Burros about his Jewish
background, as saying: "If you
publish this, I'll come and get you,
and I'll kill you. I don't care what
happens. I'll be ruined. This is
all I've got to live for."
Burros shot himself twice in
front of three witnesses at the
home of Grand Dragon Roy E.
Frankhouser Jr., where Burros
had been staying since Friday.
Frankhouser said he never had
any suspicion of Burros' Jew-
ish background although Burros
expressed fear of some kind of
exposure.
"It was the best-kept secret
since the atom bomb," Frank-
houser said.
He added that he heard Burros
make several threats to "wipe out"
the New York Times staff, whose
article would be forthcoming, "but

I thought it was all so weird I
paid little attention."
Calling Burros "obviously
sincere," he said, "Funny things,
he was more anti-Semitic than I
am." When he became a Klan or-
ganizer, Burros took the oath that
he was a white gentile American,
Frankhouser said, and the Klan
was impressed by Burros' role as
an activist.
Despite his deception, Burros
will be honored by the Klan as a
martyr to the "war," Frankhouser
said.
Meanwhile, in Washington,
the American Nazi Party, ob-
viously embarrased by the fact
that Burros, who was discovered
to be a Jew, was its national
secretary, announced its policy
"regarding Jewish persons seek-
ing membership in the Nazi
Party."
The American Nazi Party state-
ment issued Tuesday reads "A
Jewish person attempting to join
the American Nazi Party must
appear before a specially con-
stituted party board upon com-
pleting his application and having
it notarized.
"If such Jewish person is found
to be free of any subversive, Com-
munist, or Jewish organizational
influences and if such Jewish per-
son is found to be absolutely
sincere and totally honest, he is
given special training and then
sent back to join Jewish and Com-
munist organizations to spy on
thein for the American Nazi Party.
"Such a 'spy' is not officially
accepted for membership until a
long probationary period is served
and his sincerity is manifested by
conduct, service and loyalty."

Ships reaching Jaffa or Tel Aviv
from now on will be diverted ro

the twin ports was the Israeli

Britain Vows to Protect
Aden Jews; Future Dim

LONDON (JTA) — The British
high commissioner in Aden has
informed the colonial office that
special measures will be taken to
protect the Jewish community in
the colony if the need should arise.
This was disclosed here by Maurice
Edelman, MP, president of the
Anglo-Jewish Association at a meet-
ing here of the organization's
council.
Edelman said, however, that with
the continuing unrest in Aden and
the progress of the colony towards
independence, it is clear that the
Aden Jewish community as such
has no future. Most of those Jews
remaining in the colony plan to
leave for Israel with some coming
to Britain, he said,
He told the council that the
British colonial minister had re-
ceived assurances from the high
commissioner • of the colony that
the Jews of Aden would be pro-
tected if the need arose.

ALBANY, N. Y. — The State
Court of Appeals has ruled that
a woman who claims her husband
hid his Nazi background and
"fanatically anti-Semitic" views
has valid grounds for seeking an
annulment.
A 4-3 decision reversed an ear-
lier appelate division ruling and
now will go back to the State
Supreme Court for a trial to deter-
mine whether the woman's charges
are true.
The plaintiff, Mrs. Joseph
Kober of New York City, said
her husband of two years had
"falsely and fraudulently con-
cealed" from her that he had
been an officer in the German
army and a member of the Nazi
Party in World War II and that
he was fanatically anti-Semitic.
Kober argued that historical,
political and social beliefs are "not
a vital element to a marital rela-
tionship," but the Court of Appeals
ruled that "a fanatical" convic-
tion that a race or group of people
should be put to death "evinces a
diseased mind and makeup, which
parallels the ground for annul-
ment."

JERUSALEM (JTA) — A 12-
