"A History of the Modern World"
by Robert Roswell Palmer and Joel
Colton, just issued by Knopf in a
third edition, is marked by such
thoroughness, contains such fair
evaluations of modern events, that
this 1,000-page work could well be
considered an outstanding analysis
of world events.
First issued in 1950, with a sec-
ond edition published in 1956, it is
no wonder that it has assumed the
role of authoritative historical
analysis.
It commences with evaluative

the biggest moderniza-

This is a view of a section of Israel's city of the future, Ashdod,
which now has a population of more than 25,000. Ashdod, whose
development is being aided by Israel Bond funds, is now the fastest
growing city in the country, increasing at the rate of 1,000 people
per month, and is eventually expected to be Israel's fourth largest
city, after Tel Aviv, Haifa and Jerusalem. Ashdod's emergence as a
prospective metropolis is linked to its new deepwater port. Israel
bonds have been a key factor in the development of the city as well
as the new harbor as part of the industrialization of the Negev and
the exploitation of its natural resources.

Rome and the emergence of Chris-
tianity, and the Early and High
Middle Ages. It proceeds to de-
scribe "The Revolution in the -
Christian Church, 1300-1560," "The
Wars of Religion, 1560-1648," and
the establishment of West-Euro-
pean leadership.
Dealing with the European
civilization in the years 1871-
1914, describing Europe's world
supremacy, then the events that
led to World War I, the authors
give an account of the Russian
Revolution, the conflict between
democracy and dictatorship,
World War H and the contem-
porary age with cold war and
co-existence problems.
There is an account of the
emergence of the Zionist idea and
the extent of anti-Semitism. The
Coughlin era is analyzed and
there is an objective account of
the Hitler era.
While at one point the authors
seek emphasis on Jews being a re-
ligious element — in the era of
emancipation and the rise of Zion-
ism—subsequent comments on Jew-
ish developments indicate a sincere
desire at objectivity.
There is a clear understanding,
for example, of the anti-Semitism
that has developed in Russia, and
the authors in their description of:
the doctors' trial, assert that "ai/
officially inspired anti-Semitisrik---
made an appearance, thinly dis-
guised as anti-Zionism."
There is a brief account of "The
Arab. States, Pan-Arabism, Israel"
which is f actual rather than
ideologically argumentative.

The race is not always to the
swift, nor the battle to the strong.
— Amer. proverb.

For the first time science has found
a new healing substance with the
as-
tonishing ability to shrink hemor-

rhoids and to relieve pain without
surgery. In case after case, while
gently relieving pain, actual reduc-
tion (shrinkage) took place. Most
amazing of all — results were so thor-
ough that sufferers made astonishing
statements like "Piles have ceased to
be a problem!" The secret is a new
healing substance (Bio-Dyne®)— dis-
covery of a world-famous research
institute. This substance is now avail-
able in suppository or ointment form
called Preparation HO. At all drug
counters.
