Pages Out of Shaarey Zedek's History
to Roll Back at Sisterhood Anniversary
Antique cars, models in outfits
dating back to 1861, music and
dancing, will usher in the 60th an-
niversary of the Sisterhood of
Cong. Shaarey Zedek 12:30 p.m.
Monday at the synagogue.
The history of both the 104-year-
old synagogue and the sisterhood
will emerge from "Ye Aulde Album
II," the program to be preceded
by a tea honoring past presidents
and honorary directors.
As the various episodes in the
life of the synagogue and its
sisterhood are recounted, live
models will appear, dressed in
costumes suitable to the date
and the occasion.
Models include Mesdames Nor-
man Feder, Jack Bonin, Paul Bor-
man, Howard Danzig, Roger Boes-
ky, Loren Daniels, David Fishman,
Harold L. Katzman, Richard Mit-
chell, Neil Rosenthal, Murray
Shekter, Louis Soverinsky and
Harold Weisberg and Miss Arlene
Martin.
Selection of costumes and
models are under the chairman-%
ship of Mesdames Marvin Flei-
schmen, George Parzen and
Nathan Shur. Mrs. Alvin Robin-
son is handling props together
with Mrs. Irving Rogovein, who
is also social chairman.
"Ye Aulde Album II" was writ-
ten by Mesdames Bert Smokier,
Milford Pregerson, Abe Katzman

BARLEY CHOLENT
1 cup dried Lima or pea beans
2 quarts water
1 /2 cup coarse barley
2 pounds shortribs, flanken, or beef
brisket
1 teaspoon ground ginger
1 h teaspoon garlic powder
1 tablespoon salt
IA teaspoon black pepper
Place the beans and water in a
large soup kettle. Soak for at least
6 hours. Add the remaining ingredi-
ents, bring to a boil, then simmer,
covered for 30 minutes. Cut the meat
into neat, serving-sized pieces. Place
the meat, the liquid, the beans, and
the barley in a large earthenware or
iron casserole. Cover tightly. Seat the
casserole in an oven pre-heated to
225°F.; or place it on an asbestos pad
over very low heat, then place a flame
proof covering over the casserole. If
you have a deep-well cooker, you may
put the Cholent in that instead of the
casserole, and let the retained heat
complete the cooking. On Saturday
noon remove the casserole or cooker
and serve the Cholent as a hot combin-
ation soup and main dish. This amount
serves 8.
BARLEY AND MUSHROOM CASSEROLE
1 A oz. dried mushrooms
3 cups water
1 cup large pearl barley
1 well-beaten egg
1 tablespoon chicken fat
About 1/2 teaspoon salt, to taste
1/2 teaspoon pepper
If necessary, about lh cup chicken
soup
Soak the mushrooms overnight in
the water. Drain and reserve the
liquid. With a scissors cut the mush-
rooms into very small pieces and re-
turn them to the liquid. Stir the bar-
ley and egg together until well blend-
ed. Place in a greased 1-quart casser-
ole and bake, uncovered at 350°F, for
10 minutes, add the shortening, salt,
pepper, and mushrooms and their
liquid and stir until any lumps of

of the sisterhood; Mrs. Ivan

The Young. 'n Married Club of
Adas Shalom Synagogue will pre-
sent the movie "Let My People Go"
8:30 p.m. Tuesday in the board
room of the synagogue.

homeland is told in this documen-
tary.

baking, the barley will have become a
solid mass. Cover the casserole, and
bake about 1- 1A hours, until tender.
If the barley becomes too dry, add a
little chicken soup. Stir at the end
of 30 minutes of baking time. For a
dairy meal, use butter in place of
chicken fat, and milk instead of the
extra chicken soup. Serve in place of
potatoes. 'This amount serves 5 to 6.
