FOX (Copyright, 1965, JTA, Inc.) * * Why is a collective settlement in Israel called a "kibbutz?" The term "Kubbutz" comes from a Hebrew root meaning "to collect" or "to gather." Mils a "gathering" of people or "collection" of people in a community would appropriate- ly be called a "Kibbutz." Since there are other terms imlying a gathering of people that could have been used to designate such a collective, settlement, the par- ticular selection of this term is of significance. As a matter of fact, according to historians it has a most interesting background. It seems that an irreligious group of settlers adopted the term from a group of Hassidim. A group of pioneers of the Hashomer Hatzair, Poale Zionist youth, assembled to found a new collective in Emek Jezreel. Since this new type of settlement deserved a new name to designate its type of settlement, the assembly began to speculate as to what its generic title should be. One of the members of the new settlement seemed to have been overwhelmed by the spirit he had observed among a group of Hassidim known as the Breslau Hassidim. This particular sect practiced the custom of assembling every year on Rosh Hashanah in Uman. When the Soviet authorities prohibited their assembly in Uman, the members of the sect who lived in Poland gathered in Lublin while those who lived in Israel gathered in Jerusalem and in Miron. This assembly, which was a most spirited one, so impressed this non- religious Jewish brother, that he suggested naming the new type of collective settlement with the A • • • • • • • • • • • • • • • • • • • It same name used for this Hassidic ; • • • • • • • • • • -• • • • • • • • • • • • • • • • • • • • • • • • • • • • • • • • • • • • • • • • • 94 • • • • • • • • • • • •• • • • • • • • • • • • • • • • I S FLYING CARPET • • or No Flying Carpet! • • • • • • • • You Always • • • • • • Get the Best Deal • • • • • • in Town! • • • • • • • • • • • • STARK HICKEY • • • • • • • • • WEST • • 24760 WEST SEVEN MILE • • • • • • • At Grand River • • • • • Just West of Telegraph • • • KE 8-6600 • • • gathering. Since the Hassidic gathering was called a "Kibbutz," the collective settlement in Israel was then and still is now called a "Kibbutz." Perhaps the develop- ment of the new Yishuv in Israel has after all established a bridge between all types of Jews — both religious as well as non-religious. Was there any religious sign- ificance to the practice of hav- ing the sexton go around knock- ing on doors to awaken the worshipers to attend the morning services in the synagogue? This was a rather widespread custom in many European corn- munitites. Some historians like to trace this practice to the practice which was used in Biblical times when the Temple existed in Jeru- salem, at which time the shofar or trumpet was blown evtry day be- fore the daily sacrifice was offered both in the morning as well as in the afternoon. This would obvious- ly alert the populace to offer pray- ers during the time the sacrifice was being offered in the temple, so that the sacrifice would be ac- cepted and find favor in the eyes of the Almighty.
