Prof. Samuel Levin, Son of Yeshivah Founder,
to Be Honored Guest at Dedication Dinner
The dedication dinner of
Yeshivath Beth Yehudah at Cobo
Hall Nov. 14 will feature as guests
two renowned Jewish personalities,
Rabbi Gerald Werner, dinner co-
ordinator, announced.
Prof. Samuel M. Levin, former
head of Wayne State University's
economics department, will be
guest of honor. Rabbi Herschel
Schacter, chairman of the Presi-
dium of the Religious Zionists of
America, Mizrachi-Hapoel Ham-
izrachi, will deliver the keynote
address at this event marking the
dedication of the Yeshivah's new
building and campus in South-
field.
Prof. Levin, head of the WSU
economics department for 25 years,
is the son of the late Rabbi Judah
Leib Levin, founder of the
Yeshivah.
The honoree is former president
of the Jewish Social Service
Bureau (Jewish Family and Chil-
dren's Service), a member of the
budget review committee of the
Torch Drive and a former presi-
dent of the Detroit Metropolitan
Council of the Jewish National
Fund. He has been listed in the
Who's Who of America over 13
years, in the Who's Who in World
Jewry and the Directory of Amer-
ican Scholars and Who's Who in
Education.
Now professor emeritus of
Wayne, Prof. Levin has authored
many articles on economic and
social problems in more than a
dozen leading professional
journals.
Rabbi Schacter, spiritual leader
of the Mosholu Jewish Center of
the Bronx since 1946, is the former
president of the Rabbinic Alumni
of Yeshiva University, a leading
member of the executive commit-
tee on the Commission on Jewish
Chaplaincy of the National Jew-
ish Welfare Board and of the Rab-
binical Council of America.
He has visited Israel many
times and has traveled around
the world, addressing many remote
Jewish communities in the Far
East, Australia, India and es-
pecially in the lands behind the
Iron Curtain, notably in the Soviet
Union.
Rabbi Schacter gained recogni-
tion for his achievements as an
Army chaplain in combat during
World War II and was the first
Jewish chaplain to aid the Nazi
victims in Buchenwald concentra-
tion camp.

Morocco Puts 2 Rabbis in Lay Court;
Jewish Tribunal to Be Abolished?
PARIS (JTA)—Reports received
from Casablanca Tuesday indicated
that the government of Morocco
may be planning to abolish the
rabbinical courts in that country
which, until now. have had autono-
mous status with sole responsibil-
ity in Jewish personal matters.
The step was seen in prospect
as the government announced that
Chief Rabbi Saul Danan, the 80-
year-old descendent of Moses Mai-
monideS, and former Associate
Chief Rabbi Encaoua have been
named as judges of the lay su-
preme court of Morocco,.
Both Rabbis Danan and Encaoua
are now members of the Supreme
Rabbinical Tribunal, of which Rab-
bi Danan is president. That tri-
bunal is an appellate court. There
are 32 rabbinical courts in the
country which, like the Supreme
Tribunal, have autonomy in ques-
tions of personal status and in-
heritance among Jews.
It is feared that, by placing Rab-
bis Danan and Encaoua on the lay
Supreme Court, the Jewish com-
munity may no longer enjoy the
privileges of the rabbinical court
system in effect until now.
(A report from Casablanca to
the JTA Tuesday said that rabbis
are representing the Moroccan rab-
binate at the proceedings of the
National Judiciary Congress which
was opened by King Hassan Tues-
day in Fez. The two rabbis are
Moise Malka and Isaac Hazan, re-
spectively vice-president and judge
of the Rabbinical Tribunal of Casa-
blanca.)
Meanwhile, it was learned that
the Moroccan National Broadcast-
ing Service has canceled the He-
brew programs for Moroccan Jews,
apparently after Arab League in-
tervention.
Broadcast for many years, the
religious program was sponsored '
by the Moroccan Council of Jewish
Communities. The Council was not
given any notice of the intent to
cancel.
Council leaders protested to the
information ministry and to the
broadcasting service. The Jewish
leaders were given an opportunity
to protest directly to the informa-
tion minister, but it appeared the
decision was irrevocable.
