Latvia Trial Draws Thousands; Guard Tried Again in Germany RIGA (JTA). — A Riga court, trying six Latvians on charges of of the war-time murder of several thousand Jews in the Latvian town of Rezneke, hear testimony Tues- day that the defendants carried out the killing with such "effici- ency" that only one Jewish resi- dent of the town survived. The only survivor was Jacob Israeli, then a boy of 14, who was not killed by the Latvian collabora- tors with the Nazis because a non- Jewish neighbor had hid him. The trial is being held in the Latvian capital's huge palace of culture and three of the defendants are being tried in absentia. Latvian Soviet officials charged earlier in the case that Albert Eichelis, for- mer police chief in Rezneke, was in West Germany; Boleslaw Mia- kowskis, a former Rezneke police officer, in the United States; and Harold Puntelis, another former Rezneke police office, in Canada. The court indicated that a ver- dict was probable next Friday. Three defendants present are Josef Basankowcs, a former police officer; Yannis Krasofsky, another former police officer; and Peter Voicuk, former chief of the Rezneke prison. All three pleaded not guilty, con- tending that they had no choice but to carry out orders and that they were merely "minor cogs" in a machine which they did not con- trol. The prosecution charged that Eichelis gave an order that "not one Jew must remain alive in Rez- neke" and the other five defend- ants not only carried out that order but also took the initiative in mur- dering Jewish victims. The prose- cutor said there was conclusive evidence that the defendants had For Some of the best buys on new Pontiacs and Tempests ASK FOR AT Packer Pontiac 18650 LIVERNOIS block South of 7 UN 3-9300 AUTO LOANS $4 PER HUNDRED Per Year (to qualified applicants) NATIONAL BANK OF SOUTHFIRD Open Mon. thru Sat., 9:30 to 4:30 Sat. to 6 p.m. 4 CONVENIENT OFFICES • 17000 W. 8 MILE RD. served the Nazis willingly and com- mitted brutal murders on their own volition. Meanwhile in Bonn, George Schlosser, 51, formerly a guard in the Czenstochova ghetto in Poland, went on trial again as a war criminal. It is his fifth trial. In 1959 he went on trial on charges of having killed a Jewish child, and was acquited. The fol- lowing year, after an appeal against the first verdict by the prosecution, he was tried a second time, sentenced to 10 years' im- prisonment, but released when a higher court canceled the sentence. The blaze destroyed a priceless collection of rare Judaica, the ark with 18 scrolls, a stained glass window, prayer shawls, and other religious items. Police who rounded up the sus- pects said the four charged with arson are believed to have set the fire for spite. It was alleged that they broke into the synagogue seeking something to drink. Police charged three of the boys broke into the basement last Friday and that one of the three, a 14-year-old, returned late Monday night looking for sacramental wine in the com- pany of three others. When the four found nothing to drink, police said, they allegedly started the fire with prayer books and left the synagogue ablaze. When residents of the area saw smoke pouring out the building about 11 p.m. they called the fire department and synagogue offi- cials, who entered the burning building and saved some of the congregation's Torah scrolls.
