Theologian Tillich Dead; Condemned Nazi Germany C H I C A GO - World-famous !Protestant theologian Dr. Paul Tillich, who could boast he "had the honor to be the first non- Jewish professor dismissed from a German university" when the Nazis came to power, died last Fri- day at age 79. Dr. Tillich, one of Christianity's most influential theologians, rose to prominence in America after fleeing Germany in 1933. His in- fluence was so profound as to radi- cally change Protestant theology. Dr. Tillich was a member of the Frankfurt University s en a t e in 1933 when 400 Hitler brownshirts arrived to beat up the radical stu- dents. He spoke out. The philosopher recalled later he went to see the Nazi minister of education in Berlin and dis- cussed with him for a full hour the Old Testament and the im- portance to Christianity of the Jewish tradition. "At the end of that hour, I knew it was over," he said. Dr. Tillich then came to the U.S., becoming a citizen in 1940. He taught at Union Theo- logical Seminary and the Univer- sity of Chicago. Among his more than three dozen books on philosophy and ed- ucational, contemporary art and political theory, psychology and literature, a favorite of many is a little commentary he wrote at age 72- annotations to the draw- ings made by a Jewish child in the years before she was gassed and burned at Auschwitz. During the war, Dr. Tillich was active in aiding refugees from Nazi tyranny, serving on many committees and maintaining his interest in refugee-relief work through the 1950s. He wrote, in expressing his view of religion, "Being religious means asking passionately the question of our existence and being willing to receive answers, even if the answers hurt. Such an idea of re- ligion makes religion universally human, but it certainly differs from what is • usually called re- ligion . . . Religion in its inner- most nature . . . is the state of being concerned about one's own being and being universally." t WE REAMER 7117N rrizrx Mrs. Jacob Harris, 79 Hilda Harris, a member of Cong.
