Eshkol Celebrates 70th Birthday With Vigorous `Str ► ll' Around Cit JERUSALEM (JTA) — Prime Minister Levi Eshkol, who became 70 years of age Monday, began celebrating his birthday Sunday night by campaigning vigorously for the election of the . 1VLapai- Ahdut Avoda slate in the general lections to be- held next Tuesday. He addressed several street ral- lies, visited the Baka and Kata- mon districts of this city, populat- ed chiefly by new immigrants, ad- dressed crowds from the balconies of apartment houses in those areas, and entered homes where he shook hands with the residents and urged them to vote for the ticket which he heads. In one of the homes, he was presented with a large birthday cake. Deputy Premier Abba Eban reported Tuesday that public opinion polls taken for the Mapai-Ahdut Avoda alignment had made the two parties "very optimistic" about the outcome of the elections. He added that the polls indicated that Rafi would be "lucky" to get more than 10 seats in Israel's parliament. He said the Polls did not indi: cate there would be any great in- crease for the Gahal list or for the opposition Mapam - or the National Religious bloc. He said that he personally favored formation of a "classic coalition" under Premier Eshkol of Mapai, Ahdut Avoda, the National Religious Party, Mapam and the Independent Liberals who refused to join the Gahal align- ment. Eshkol's canvassing of the residential neighborhood was typical of the last stages of the long election campaign to be culminated at the polls, where the Israeli voters will choose 120 members of the next Knes- set. Many Israelis are frankly tired of the long campaign in which a new group, David Ben-Gurion's Israel Workers List (Rafi) is challenging the Eshkol leadership of the Mapai-Ahdut Avoda align- ment, while another group, Gahal, uniting Herut and the General Zionists, is contending for suprem- acy at the polls. In most of his speeches, Eshkol urged the voters to give the Mapai- Ahdut Av.oda alignment a plural- ity large enough to enable his group to form a coalition govern- ment "without making it necessary to give far-reaching concessions to minor parties." A group of Mapai veterans were disclosed Monday to have met with former Premier David Ben- Gurion in a bid to heal the party breach after the Nov. 2 municipal and parliamentary elections. The party leaders spoke with Ben- Gurion for more than an hour. At one point in the talks, one of the leaders proposed formation' of a committee of three to arbi- trate the dispute between Premier Eshkol and former Premier Ben- Gurion. To this Ben-Gurion re- portedly commented "very well, but they should be judges." Israeli Journalists Plan Strike Against Libel Law TEL AVIV (JTA) — The Israel Journalists Association voted to conduct a 24-hour strike on Nov. 16 in protest against a new law, passed during the last session of the Knesse (parliament). The law, defining libel, is said by the journ- alists to contain clauses curbing freedom of the press. The Journalists Association had denounced the new libel law since its adoption and threatened to strike in protest. However, the walk-out was delayed until after Israel's _general elections, which will be held Nov. 2.
