They include a history of Jewish music, led by Cantors Ruben Erlbaum, Reuven Frankel, Harold Orbach and Jason Tickton; an introduction to the Mishnah, taught by Sidney Selig, educational director of the congregation; and Mexico Jews Mob Service to Hear Cantor Bagley A crowd of 2,000 Jews from Mexico City flocked to High Holy Day services at which former Beth Aaron Cantor David Bagley chant- ed the prayers, a Detroiter report- ed on his return from a six-week stay there. Morrie Weiner, whose profession- al name is Mort Wayne, was in- vited by Cantor Bagley, the new chief rabbi of Mexico City, to lead a choir for the Rosh Hashanah and Yom Kippur services at the elegant new Nidchei Yisrael Synagogue. For his first major service at the synagogue, -Cantor Bagley "sang as I have never heard him sing before," said Weiner, a former member of the Beth Aaron choir. "The Jews of Mexico City are an emotional people; they cried be- cause it was so beautiful. They ac- tually applauded" at the end of the services—most unusual, especially for an Orthodox synagogue." The seating capacity of Nidchel Yisreal is normally 900, Wein- er said, but they were so eager to hear Cantor Bagley, seats had to be found for 2,000. Many young people were among them, "and they didn't move out of their seats for the entire service." Young (33) Cantor Bagley tried to hurry the Yom Kippur service so as to end it at the customery 7 p.m., but the congregation wouldn't let him, Weiner said. "They flocked around him after Neilah (the concluding service) and wouldn't let him leave 'til 20 min- utes to 8."
