Herschel Bernardi
New 'Fiddler' Lead

NEW YORK—The role of Tevye
in the Broadway musical hit, "Fid-
dler on the Roof," has gone to
Herschel Bernardi. The fourth
Tevye since Zero Mostel created
the role last year, Bernardi will
assume the role Nov. 8.
Bernardi succeeds Luther Adler,
who after two
months in the
role, has found
it "too ardous"
and "too demand-
ing from a sing-
ing viewpoint."
He will resume :
the role on tour'
April 11.
Another Tevye .
was Paul Lipson,
Mostel's under-
study, who played
the role several
times.
Bernardi is
back from Rome,
where he acted;
Bernardi
with Rex Harri-
son in the film "Anyone for
Venice?"
He is well acquainted with "Fid-
dler's" sources: in 1944 he helped
Howard da Silva with a recording
of Sholom Aleichem's stories and
later toured in a one-man program
of the Sholom Aleichem tales. In
1954 he took over da Silva's role
in the off-Broadway production of
"The World of Sholom Aleichem"
and three years later directed
Arnold Perl's dramatic version of
"Tevye" in Los Angeles.
Bernardi last was in Detroit in
1955.

He originally auditioned for
the part of the butcher in "Fid-
dler," but did not accept it; he
had wanted the role of Tevye,
which Mostel won.

Bernardi has appeared on Broad-
way, in television commercials and
on such shows as "Bonanza" and
"Dr. Kildare." The son of Helen
and Beryl Bernardi, character
players on the Yiddish stage, he
had his start in the theater at the
age of 6 months. His role: a baby
who could cry.
