Communitywide Response Assures
Great Success for Balfour Concert
The communitywide response to the Balfour Concert to be
sponsored Nov. 21 at Ford Auditorium, by the Zionist Organization of
Detroit, assures for it an unprecedented success, Dr. Alex Friedlaender,
chairman, stated this week. He reported on the large number of spon-
sors at a meeting of the concert committee held at the Zionist Cultural
Center. In the photo are (from left), Judge Ira Kaufman, chairman of
the ZOD executive committee; Carmi M. Slomovitz, ZOD president;
Abraham Borman, co-chairman of the sponsors' committee; and Dr.
Friedlaender. The concert will feature Nathan Milstein, world-famous
violinist, and the Detroit Symphony Orchestra under the direction of
Paul Paray..

Dr. Avraham Biran, Israel's Director
of Antiquities Dept., to Speak Here
In conjunction with the adult
Jewish education program of the
Metropolitan Detroit Bnai Brith
Men's and Women's Councils and
Cong. Shaarey Zedek, noted Israeli
archaeologist Dr. Avraham Biran
will visit Detroit Nov. 2.
On tour of this
country as Bnai

visiting lecturer,
Dr. Biran will
speak 8:30 p.m.
Nov. 2 at Shaarey
Zedek. He will
discuss "Israel —
Land of the
Dr.. Biran Bible."
Dr. Biran, director of Israel's de-
partment of antiquities and muse-
ums, is charged with the
supervision of all archaeological
excavating in Israel. A third-gen-
eration Isareli, he conducted his
graduate studies at John Hopkins
University and is the author of
numerous articles in Hebrew and
English on historical, biblical and
archaeological subjects.

ADL program Monday at the home
of Dr. and Mrs. Mischa Sachs, 6800
W. Knollwood Circle, Birmingham.
Nelson Chase of the ADL Michigan
regional advising board will speak
on "Discrimination in Suburbia"
and what can be done about it.
Dr. Bernard Schmidt will discuss
a Torah subject. Guests invited.

night of entertainment, featuring
stars from stage, radio-TV and
night clubs, 8:30 p.m. Monday at
the Labor Zionist Institute. Sol
Steinberg, chairman of the pro-

refreshments will follow the show,
to which members' families and
friends are invited. Honored guest
will be Morris Direnfeld, national
commissioner for . the Anti-Defama-

on UJA Survey Tour
Ellen Hendrie Schultz became
the bride of Alan Edward Swartz
in a recent afternoon ceremony,
at which Rabbi M. Robert Syme
officiated in Temple Israel. Can-
tor Harold Orbach was soloist.
The bride is the daughter of
Mr. and Mrs. Max Shultz of Little-
field Ave. Her-husband is the son
of Dr. Louis Swartz of Royal Oak
and Mrs. Ida Swartz of Roslyn Rd.
A Bianchi gown of candlelight
satin was chosen by the bride. It
was beaded all over with frosted
pearls and crystals, and it featured
a matching train and headpiece.
She carried orchids and lilies of
the valley on her confirmation
Bible.
Mrs. Jordan Kaha, the bride-
groom's sister, was matron of
honor, and Debra Shillman was
maid of honor. Bridesmaids were
Mrs. David Wein, Julie Magidsohn
and Lynn Gotlieb.
Joel Raitt was best man, while
Clayton Jerris of Windsor, Harold
Keller and Dr. Stanley Levy served
as ushers.
Following a Miami Beach honey-
moon, the couple will live in Oak
Park.

are among the 20 women leaders
from 14 key communities in the
U. S. who are taking a three-
week overseas survey of welfare,
resettlement and immigrant ab-
sorption programs supported by
the United Jewish Appeal in Eu-
rope and Isreal.

the world premier of Walt Disney's
latest film, "That Darn Cat." The
comedy-thriller will be presented
8:30 p.m. Nov. 12, by, the Women's
Committee of Camp Oakland, a
camp for underprivileged children.

The 58th annual Michigan Di•
trict Conference of the Workmen's
Circle will open 8:30 p.m. today
at the W. C. Center.
Councilman Mel Ravitz will be
guest speaker. Arthur Nunberg of
the national executive committee
of W. C. also will deliver an ad-
dress.
A musical program will be pre-
sented by Ruth Goldman with
Greta Teiler at the piano.
Saturday sessions will com-
mence with a cocktail hour at
8 p.m., after which workshops
and a seminar will be organized
to discuss "The Future of Work-
men's Circle," "The Problems
of Membership" and "Cultural
Activities."
Sunday sessions, to start at 11
a.m., will include reports and dis-
cussions. Luncheon will be served
by the Women's Division.
The public is invited to the open-
ing session.
