`Anti-Semitism' of Negro Businessmen
Attributed to 'Aggressive Competition'
WASHINGTON (JTA) —Some
Negro businessmen appear to have
developed an anti-Semitic attitude
because Jewish merchants are
"aggressive competitor s and
abound in the ghettos," according
to Eugene P. Foley, assistant sec-
retary of commerce and director
of the U. S. Economic Develop-
ment Administration, as quoted by
the Washington Post.

the Small Business Administra-
tion, made available to the Wash-
ington newspaper his comments
on handicaps of Negro-owned busi-
nesses.
Commenting on what appeared
to him to be an anti-Semitic atti-
tude among some Negroes, Foley
ascribed it "to the fact that Jewish
merchants are 'aggressive competi-
tors and abound in the ghettos.' "
He noted, for example, that "in
Harlem and in other largely Negro
areas, Jews own more stores than
any other ethnic group."
Foley was quoted as stating
that because of the proximity of
Jewish merchants to Negroes,
the latter's anti-white feelings
are expressed in the form of
anti-Semitism. But Jewish mer-
chants, he pointed out, abound
in most sections of every city.
This, he says, is because the
great majority of German and
Eastern European Jews who
came to this country during the
19th Century had business and
commercial backgrounds.
The Post said that in the course
of his probing, Foley took issue
with two reasons "frequently cited
by Negroes themselves for the
failure of the Negro American to
develop as a successful business-
man: lack of capital due to racist
bankers and unfair competition
from Jewish merchants."
Foley's conclusion was that the
number of Negro-owned busi
nesses probably will decline in the
next decade, but hopefully, "they
will be stronger. more competitive
and more profitable." He found
the Negro "a very small business-
man — generally not a very good
businessman; and, frankly, not a
very significant factor in the
Negro community."
1,600 Youths Belong
to Polish Jewish Clubs

WARSAW—A total of 1,600 boys
and girls are currently members
of the 22 Jewish youth clubs spon-
sored by the Jewish Cultural and
Social Association, the Folkstimme,
Yiddish newspaper published here,
reported Wednesday.
The newspaper reported that the
figure were disclosed during a
recent conference of leaders of the
clubs which offer a program of
Yiddish language, Jewish history
and Jewish literature in addition
to the usual club activities pro-
vided for Polish youth.
The club leaders explained that
the aim of the Jewish clubs was
to implant in members a love for
Poland as well as a loVe for Jew-
ishness and that the club pro-
grams were developed accordingly.

Sentenced ; Sought to 'Rid
Nation of Jewish Control'
LONDON (JTA)—Six men and
two women members of the Brit-
ish Ku Klux Klan were found
guilty of charges growing out of
a meeting at which they were re-
portedly told that the goal of the
group was to "rid Britain of Jew-
ish control."
Seven were found guilty of wear-
ing a uniform at a public meeting
signifying association with a poli-
tical organization, in violation of
the 1936 Public Order Act. All eight
were found guilty of aiding and
abetting two of the other defend-
ants.
Patrick Webb, 36, and William
Duncan, 45, each were sentenced
to three months imprisonment
for wearing uniforms. Robert
Relf, 42, received a three-months
jail term for aiding and abetting.
Others received fines of 20
pounds ($56) to 25 pounds ($70).
All eight had pleaded innocent.
During the trial, the prosecutor
also told the court about a list of
Jewish leaders, including Labor
leader and Minister Mrs. Barbara
Castle and the Jewish wife of
Labor leader George Brown,
whom the movement planned "to
get rid of."
The prosecutor said that the de-
fendants met on June 19 at Rugby
near London, all wearing long
white robes with a black cross
over the heart, and cloth head
covers with slits for the eyes and
mouth.
The aims of the British KKK
were explained by a man named
Newly, who is a member of the
tiny British National Socalist
movement which split with Colin
Jordan's slightly larger Nazi
group.
