Globke, Servatius Summoned as Witnesses in Nazi Trials; Find Victims' Valuables in Vienna; Memorials Dedicated BONN (JTA) — Dr. Hans Globke, State Secretary to former Chancellor Konrad Adenauer, and Dr. Robert Servatius, counsel for Adolf Eichmann in his Jerusalem trial, were the principal witnesses in the trial here of Max Merten, former key German occupation of- ficial in Greece. The latter is on trial on charges of making false accusations in dec- laring publicly five years ago that Dr. Globke, as a major official in the Nazi Justice Ministry, opposed a Merten proposal to save a large number of Jews from deportation from Salonika to Nazi death camps. According to Merten, Eichmann agreed to the proposal and then telephoned Dr. Globke, who al- legedly opposed it. Merten repeated the charges in full when he ap- peared at the trial last week. Dr. Globke charged that the Merten story was false and demanded an investigation which led to Merten's indictment and trial. Dr. Globke said in his testimony that t h e entire story was an "absolute falsehood," that he had never had any official contact with Eichmann, then head of the Gestapo Jewish Affairs department, and that he had met Eichmann only once. He also testified that even if Eichmann had wanted to tele- phone somebody to ask permission in such a situation, that he Dr. Fritz Kahn's 'The Human Body': Most Valuable Guide for Every Home Dr. Fritz Kahn; author of a num- ber of books on human biology, whose "Man in Structure and Func- tion" is among the best available works on the human anatomy, has produced another large, remark- ably well illustrated work that emerges as a great contribution towards an understanding of the functions of the body. "The Human Body," published by Random House, is an encyclope- dic work. It is complete, thorough, written so that the average lay- man can understand it and benefit from it, and at the same time it will no doubt add to the merito- rious works that will be of assist- ance also to the professionals. There are 32 full - color illustrated pages that assist the reader in understanding the body and its functions, and the total number of 325 illustrations in the book are part of a truly great product on a vital subject that is little understood but be- comes better known thanks to the able physician-author. Dr. Kohn's immense work, with its numerous diagrams, its multiplicity of facts, serves, with clarity, as a guide to the human body, as an explanatory volume that introduces the reader to the mysteries of the human functions, to the wonders that make them operate. The cells, the fat, the muscles; the heart, the blood vessels, the kidneys, the brain; the male and female sex organs and their re- productive functions; respiration, digestion, taste, smell, hearing, sight — these and many, many more are the elements and functions elaborated upon. Dr. Kahn's "The Human Body" is so valuable, so well outlined, so important, that it ought to be in every home as an immediately available guide for a knowledge of the human functions. Linked with Dr. Kahn's "The Human Body," we thus have a great work for adults and a com- panion volume for the youth. (Globke) was not in a position then to deal with such a request because it was outside his duties. Dr. Servatius testified that, at the start of the Eichmann trial in Jerusalem, he had asked Eichmann about the Greek case and that Eichmann then said he could not recall either Merten or Globke but that later. Eichmann told him "now I remember." Dr. Servatius said that Eichmann had not wanted to involve Dr. Globke in his trial be- cause he hoped that the West German Government would ask his (Eichmann's) extradition to West Germany. Bamberg Cemetery Repairs Done by German Volunteers BAMBERG, W. Germany (JTA) — A Jewish cemetery which was the target last June of what was considered the worst act of vandal- ism in postwar German history, was reconsecrated in ceremonies on the day before Yom Kippur. Swastikas and anti-S emitic slogans, such as "Six Million Were Too Few," were found daubed on 32 gravestones on June 13. After an intensive search, police arrested Reinhard Woitzik, 20-year-old son of a former member of the SS, who confessed the smearings. He was committeed for psychiatric ex- amination. Volunteers who offered to repair the damage worked an estimated 700 hours and used 2 500 flowers and 100 tons of material in their renovation work, it was reported at the ceremony, conducted by Rabbi Hans Gruenewald of Munich.
