THE BEST KNOWN restaurant
to many New Yorkers and Cali-
fornians who visit Detroit is the
London Chop House . . . While
we hope we have pretty well
proved to the regular readers of
this column that Detroit has plenty
of good restaurants, we can find
little quarrel with visitors who go
to the London Chop House . . .
Unquestionably it is one of Amer-
ica's better restaurants . . The

I UNCLE JOHN'S
r. 0 PANCAKE HOUSE

(Just East of Greenfield)

restaurant . . . It is located in
the basement of the Murphy Build-
ing . . • The walls are dark wood
paneling covered with caricatures
of celebrities . . . The tables are
covered with red checked table-
cloths .. . As might he expected,
the Chop House menu is a la carte
and enjoys the reputation of being
the most extensive and expensive
in town . .. In spite of their na-
tional reputation and superb
kitchen, under the direction of
the Chef de Cuisine Pancho Velez,
the specialties of the house are
two very simple entrees . . . ham-
burger and perch . . . Danish tur-
bot, a form of sole, is also one of
the specialties . • Other contri-
butions of the London Chop House
to the gastronomic culture of De-
troit include the Caesar Salad and
a wine cellar that bossman Les
Gruber modestly describes as the
"best in the Midwest, maybe from
New York to California."
IN 1621, ANY French innkeeper
was liable to arrest and imprison-
ment if a patron complained of a
stomach ache after eating . . . In
17th century Greece, only brazen
women ate in the presence of men
. An unmarried woman's reputa-
tion was ruined if a young man
saw her at a dining table.
THOSE WHO ARE continually
searching for something differ-
ent from the ordinary might
find that this cocktail not only
delights the eye, but provides a
delicate and distinctive flavor
as well . . . Combine these in-
gredients, % oz. Raspberry Sy-
rup, % oz. Lime Juice, % oz.
White Rum, % oz. Apple Bran-
dy, and 4 or 5 drops of Anisette.
• • • Shake with cracked ice and
strain into a California Cocktail
Glass.
PETER'S BACKYARD in New
York is on 64 West 10th Street ...
This restaurant, in the heart of
Greenwich Village, has been one
of the town's popular beef places
for 75 years ... Steaks broiled on
open charcoal hearth . . . Don't
overlook the Rocky Mountain
brook trout.

"COMEDY HAS A NEW FREEDOM"

o

Ell

All the old and new comedic de-
vices that the miracle of motion
pictures has made possible are in-
corporated in the comedy extrava-
ganza,- "The Great Race," which
opened Wdenesday at the Michi-
gan Theater.
Blake Edwards' picture had a
seven-month shooting schedule
which carried the company from
California to Kentucky, to Austria
and to France, with a climactic
finale at the Eiffel Tower in Paris.
It took Warner Bros. craftsmen
almost six months to assemble the
unbelievable cars used in the race
about which the film revolves.
Stars in the slapstick meller-
drama are Jack Lemmon (in ma-
levolent black), Tony Curtis (in
sparkling white as befits a hero)
and Natalie Wood (in the happy
pink of a newspapering suffrag-
ette.)
