Sholom Aleichem's `Inside Kasrilevke'
Enhanced by 30 of Shahn's Drawings

"Fiddler on the Roof" served
to arouse new interest in Sholom
Aleichem and especially to intro-
duce the great Yiddish humorist's
works to non-Jews. It re-introduced i
Sholom Aleichem to Jews.
It is not to be inferred, how-
ever, that Sholom Aleichem was
unknown. The many works by him
and about him that have been
published in recent years reaf-
firm that the humorist never ceased
to be an attraction to readers of
all faiths.
A new volume containing trans-
lations of his stories into Eng-
lish attests to this fact. Schocken

just issued Sholom
Aleichem's "Inside Krasrilevke."
Translated from the Yiddish by
Isidore Goldstick, it contains the
stories "Dos Naye Kasrilevke,"
"Kasrilevke Nisrofim" and "Kas-
rilevke Moshav Z'Kenim."

Books has

The Kasrilevke characters who
pass in review, the fascinating
stories about their attitudes on
life, the problems they face and
the manner in which they under-
take to solve them, once again
bring to light the Sholom Alei-
chem genius that was able to
brilliantly bring to the world's
attention the dilemmas of the
folk he portrays with such skill.

These are not the same people
who appear in "Tevye" and as they
are depicted on the stage in "The
Fiddler." But they are-elated.
Their actions, their thinking is
the same.
The author's foreword is a fore-
warning. He tells the reader that
just as there are guides to Berlin,
Moscow, Paris, why not one to
Kasrilevke? And he calls his "In-
side Kasilevke" a "guide" to the
name of a city he had made
famous.

And so the people and their
life, Kasrilevke and its neighbor-
ing Yehupetz, are described in
the • humor-satire of the great
Yiddish writer.

The reader will learn about the
fire in Kasrilevke—and that's an
experience. He'll find a new life
in a community that is introduced
to the great Adler and to the the-
ater.
And then there is the hilarious
story about the restaurant—the
lady who makes a real formality
of serving the traveler who comes
to the eatery for some food. He
is willing to settle for any food,
but the manner in which he finally
gets his herring and the finally
acquired bread creates a real
drama out of a "feast."

There is the description of the
hotel; ideologies and other fac-
tors are elements in the stories

that have become famous in the
humor of Sholom Aleichem.

Spinoza Rejected Maimonides'

There are the musicians who will
remind the reader of "The Fid-

Indeed, there is humor and
pathos in "Inside Kasrilevke." It
is the vigorous work of a great
writer.

Israel Guide
Is Marked
by Expertness

As part of the Nagel Travel
Guide Series, McGraw-Hill Book
Co. has issued a slightly larger
than pocket-sized edition on Israel.
Is is an impressive, all-inclusive
travel guide, supplemented by an
excellent set of color maps and
containing information of an his-
torical nature.
Giving this guide superiority over
many of the previously produced
Israel guides is the series of spe-
cial essays on important Israeli in-
terests.

The guide opens with an es-
say on Israel's history dating
from earliest times. Theodore F.
Meysel's outline is factual and
introduces the reader and travel-
er to the basic Israeli facts.

Then there is a special essay on
the Dead Sea Scrolls by Abbe
Matthias Deleon
The explanatory notes on Zionist
and Israeli parties also are most
helpful.
Numerous historical notes which
are appended to the various places
to which the tourist is guided as-
sist in gaining full knowledge about
Israel, its holy places, its newly-
established settlements and indus-
tries.

An interesting approach is in-
dicated in the chapter "Round
the Sea of Galilee. This guide
explains the sanctuary of the
Druses and has excellent ex-
planatory notes on the city of
Tiberias, Harold's role in history,
New Testament references, etc.

in his description of the philoso-

Dr. Feuer maintains that Spi-
noza "regarded Maimonides' meta-
phorical interpretations of the Bi-
ble as 'harmful, useless and ab-
surd' and the Guide to the Per-
plexed as "a further entrapment
for the bewildered."

2 Aides Represent King
of Morocco at Synagogue

PARIS (JTA)—King Hassan of
Morocco was represented at Yom
Kippur services in Casablanca's
main synagogue by two of his
closest advisers, Interior Minister
General Oufkir and Casablanca
Governor Col. Sefioui, it was re-
ported here.
The two officials presented the
king's "best wishes to his loyal
Jewish subjects" to the commun-
ity's chief rabbi and principal Jew-
ish leaders. Despite various anti-
Jewish campaigns aimed at King
Hassan's government, the presence
of the two officials at the syna-
gogue received considerable pub-
licity in the Moroccan press.
