Working Older Adult
Seeks Housing in a
Jewish Atmosphere

Editor, The Jewish News:
Today, in Detroit, there exists
a large group of Jewish blue - and
white - collared working men and
women, 55 plus, within a $5,000
to $8,000 income bracket, who are
alone.
They consist of government em-
ployes, semi - professional a n d
semi - skilled workers, living in
apartments, hotels and renting
rooms. There seems to be an
urgent need for living quarters in
a Jewish atmosphere.
Is there a possibility of 'establish-
ing an all-Jewish multiple dwelling,
studio apartments, with a dining
room, serving breakfast and din-
ners at a reasonable cost for this
group?
Many other denominations
maintain all-women or senior-
citizens room- and-board facilities
with emphasis on religious holi-
days, social and recreational
functions. Many of us have been
brought up in very Orthodox
homes but have drifted far away
and would like to feel we are
Jews again .. .
. . . Their contribution and im-
pact on the Jewish community,
both the youth and the relatives
of these neglected ones, would far
exceed the initial investment be-
cause they desire to be identified
as Jews. Many of this group are
now covered by adequate life in-
C , surance policies,' and all or part
of the beneficiary could be changed
to this (sponsoring community)
organization.
The location could be near the
downtown area within the vicinity
of the Downtown Synagogue.
How often one reads an obituary
notice, "No survivors". How often
so many of this group are alone
at Holidays.
