Peter Gidion On the Ar The Michigan Chronicle, the leading Negro weekly, in an edi- torial greeting the Jewish commu- nity on the New Year, takes note of the Jews' role in the battle for civil rights and declares: "The story of the Jewish peo- ple's role in the betterment of mankind is a magnificent one. Throughout history they have stood on the front lines of the continu- ing struggle for full human rights. "Today, because of their affinity to this never-ending struggle the Jewish soldier, from Rabbi to Jew- ish housewife, has fought on the civil rights battlefield as if the out- come depended on Jews alone." To mark the occasion, more than $750,000 in Israel Bonds was sold in Borman's honor. In response to encomia expressed to him, Borman, at the conclusion of a long program, while express- ing thanks for the tributes extend_ ed to him, appealed for continued community efforts in behalf of Israel Bonds. With Edward G. Robinson as principal speaker, participants in the program included Rabbi Morris Adler, who expressed the official tribute of the evening; Louis H. Boyar of Los Angeles, chairman of the board of gov- ernors of the Israel Bond Or- ganization, who read the list of purchasers; Dr. Joseph J. UN 1-6688 honor to Borman, Fisher read a message of greeting from Gov- ernor George Romney. Robinson, in a splendidly com- posed address, spoke of the cen- turies of evolution that led to 20th century enlightenment and "the awakening of man to self-realiza- tion in a world that is getting better," and declared that Israel fits well into this ferment of re- birth. "Israel pumps fresh oxygen in areas of demoralization," he added. He described Israel's role in pro- viding aid for underdeveloped na- tions and said: "Let that be our pleasure and our pride. Israel is a focus of morality to animate fel- low nations. We are here not only as Jews but primarily as citizens of the entire world, and what we do for Israel we do for mankind and therefore for ourselves." "Israel is part of the 20th cen- tury emerging from the gloom of centuries," Robinson said. The fulfillment of the Kingdom of God and the brotherhood of man can't wait and must be fashioned today." He said• there is need for con- tinued efforts in Israel's behalf and urged that there be no inter- ruption in such labors. Boyar, reporting Israel Bond sales of $800,000,000 since the introduction of the investment ef- fort in 1951, said that "Bonds wiped out poverty in Israel." He explained that there is no unem- ployment in Israel, that all who are able are working at produc- tive jobs — "because you loaned the State $800,000,000." Rabbi Adler praised Borman for his modesty, his friendship, his compassion and his loyalty to country and faith. "He never ceased being humble and grateful," Rabbi Adler said, referring to the gratitude Borman had shown for the privileges of being in Amer- ica. Dr. Schwartz similarly said to Borman: "To men like you we owe gratitude." He recalled Bor- man's lifetime of efforts in behalf of UJA as well as Bonds and said: "In all these years this modest man never sought the limelight, al- ways showing love and devotion to the Jewish people and to humani- tarian causes the world over."
