Next Stratford Festival Balances Cycle, Comedy

Three plays by William Shake-
speare, an opera and two other
plays will be presented in 1966
during a lengthened 14th season
of the Stratford Festival, it was
announced at a meeting of the
board of Governors in Stratford,
Ontario.
The program, pro pos e d by
Michael Langham, artistic di-
rector of the festival, consists of
"Henry V," "Henry VI," "Twelfth

Night." the Mozart opera "Don
Giovanni" and two other plays.
The season will be extended by
two weeks to 18 and opens June
6, the earliest ever. It closes Oct.
8, the latest on record. As usual
the last several weeks will be de-
voted largely to student audiences
with two evening performances
open to the general public.
Langham, who interrupted his
year's leave of absence to propose
the program, said the opera and -
the two unnamed plays will be
presented at the Avon Theater.
"Henry V" and "Henry VI"
continue the historical cycle begun
in Stratford in 1964 with "Richard
II," and continued in 1965 with
both parts of "Henry IV," with
the second part retitled "Fal-
staff." "Henry V," first presented
at Stratford during.the 1956 season
will have a completely new stag-
ing.
"In 'Henry V,' Shakespeare
reaches the culmination of the first
part of the historical cycle, of
which the Wars of the Roses form
the last part," Langham said.
