The Hebrew Ladies Aid Society Siddur Meforash, Splendid Prayerbook Planned for Young, Suitable for All wish to extend their best wishes to all their members, friends and the entire Jewish Community for a Happy and Healthy New Year Translations of prayers are vital to worshiping that requires proper understanding of the services. Serious efforts have been made in recent years to assure the availabil- ity of suitable siddurim. A very impressive result of such efforts is the "Siddur Meforash"- literally "the explicit prayerbook" — that is replete with explanations and with proper translations. Prepared with explanatory notes by Rabbi Ralph De Koven, pub- lished by Ktav (65 Suffolk, NY2), this prayer book will be found use- ful by all worshipers. While it was primarily intended for chil- dren and for use in schools, it has so many advantages that adults will benefit from it as well. Commencing with a brief ex- planation of tefilah — of Jewish prayer — Rabbi De Koven points out that "it is a way to show our feelings." He proceeds to indicate Best Wishes For A Year Filled With Health, Happiness and Peace Dr. and Mrs. Joel I. The translations are splendid for children, and the book's read- ability, the large type, the ar- rangements and the contents are highly commendable. Prayers for daily, Sabbath and holiday services are included. The prayerbook is traditional in con- tent. It includes the Pirke Avoth — the Sayings of the Fathers — and the Akdamut for Shavuot. All of the special holiday prayers are in this prayerbook. Of special interest is the "Prayer Dictionary" which com- mences, unlike the Siddur itself, from left to right in this volume. Selected for this prayerbook by Edith and Oscar Tarcov from "The Illustrated Book of Jewish Knowledge," this dictionary contains all the relevant terms for an understanding of Jewish services, basic traditions, holy days and festivals and symbolism in Jewish life. The Siddur Meforash is a note- worthy accomplishment. Its con- tents, translations, typography and all-inclusiveness make it a highly commendable compilation and ex- planation of prayers for the young and their elders. Choir Ushers In Rosh Hashanah for Patients at Sinai Hospital Twenty - eight worshipers at- tended Rosh Hashanah services Sunday afternoon at Sinai Hos- pital in "a service like I've never seen before," one observer said. All 28 were ambulatory—in wheel- chairs or on crutches. For the special, brief service held in a conference room. Rabbis Jacob Segal and Leonard Cahan of Cong. Adas Shalom officiated. Cantor Nicholas Fenakel and the synagogue choir chanted a short- ened liturgy. Even the president of Adas Shalom, Harry Goldberg, deliv- ered a brief talk. Goldberg was a patient at the time. Rabbi David Bakst, who helped Goldberg organize the service, has been chaplain at Sinai since it was built. "We've always had serv- ices before," he said, "on Shabbos and the holidays, but I've never seen one like this before. The Holy Day Israel Bond Appeals Set for Yom Kippur Most of the Israel Bond High Holy Day appeals will be held on Kol Nidre and at Yizkor services on Yom Kippur. Rabbi Jacob E. Ira Hirschmann, who negotiated the rescue of many Jews from Romania during World War II and served as special inspector general of UNRRA, will speak in the Nus- baum Hall of Beth Abraham for Kol Nidre and in the Beth Abraham Sanctuary on Yom Kippur. Zvi Kolitz, co-producer of the play, "The Deputy," and producer of the Israeli film classic, "Hill 24 Doesn't Answer," will address worshipers at Shaarey Shomayim for Kol Nidre and at Beth Aaron at the Yizkor service on Yom Kippur. Rabbi Jack Goldman will speak on Yom Kippur at Bnai Zion and Shomrey Emunah. Rabbi Id a x Kapustin, Wayne State University Hillel director and David J. Cohen will address worshipers at Beth Tefilo Emanuel Tikvah for Kol Nidre. patients were crying, it was so beautiful." Currently, there is no chapel at Sinai Hospital, but Dr. Julien Priver, executive vice president, said plans for a new addition will include an inter-faith chapel where both patients and their families may worship. I wish to express my deepest thanks and appreciation to my many friends, and the clergy who were so thoughtful and kind during my illness, and wish them a hearty G'mar Chasimo Tova Morris Dorn With Best Wishes For A Happy and Healthy New Year To All Our Relatives and Friends The SHELDON ROTT ORCHESTRA 14001 Oak Park Blvd. Oak Park, Michigan I:='=-=-=-C=•"".1%=-=-=-=-=-=-=-"-T., -', ' .
