Orthodox Leader Replies to Russian Rabbis Eshkol at Opening

NEW YORK (JTA) — R a b bi
Israel Miller, president of the
Rabbinical Council of America
(Orthodox), replied to an "open
letter" addressed to him last week-
end, on the eve of the Eternal
Light Vigil in Washington, calling
that action "senseless." The letter,
released by the Soviet Embassy
in Washington, bore the signatures
of Moscow's Chief Rabbi Yehudah
Leib Levin; another Moscow Jewish
leader, Rabbi Natan Olevsky; and
Rabbi Avraam Haim Lubanov, of
Leningrad. In his reply, Rabbi
Miller told the Jewish Telegraphic
Agency:
"I was surprised at the reaction
of the respected Russian rabbis in
their open letter to me released
by the Soviet Embassy. From the
tenor of their letter, I assume that
they did not ask for an opportunity
to read my complete recent state-
ment which I made upon my return
from Moscow, and which I will be
pleased to send to them.

fact that all is not well

Communist Party newspaper,
Pravda, which, about two week ago,

a non-existent condition.
"I was pleased to hear from the
rabbis that preparations for the
publication of the praperbook are
completed, that they are getting
ready for 'new' enrollment in the
yeshiva, and that matzoh will be
baked in all religious communities.
I repeat the words of my state-
ment that 'these concessions repre-
sent only the beginning of a
change which will result in the
normalization of life for the entire
Jewish community of Russia.' I
pray that this will be so.

TEL AVIV (JTA)—The new port
facilities of Eilat, Israel's south-
ernmost port, were inaugurated in
the presence of Premier Levi Esh-
kol. Among the features of the
26,000,000 pound ($9,000,000) port
are a huge wharf, potash and phos-
phate warehouses and equipment
for loading bulk cargoes with a
10,000-ton daily capacity.
The premier expressed the hope
that the port would develop Israel's
ties with Asian-African countries.
Transport Minister Moshe Carmel
said that in 1970, the port would
handle more than a million tons
annually compared with the present
233,000 tons a year.

Radio Liberty's programming for
Rosh Hashanah, Yom Kippur and
Sukkot was expanded this year,
according to Dr. Gene Sosin, head
of the privately sponsored net-
work's U.S. Division.
