Ex-Forward Editor Dead

CHICAGO (JTA) — Jacob Segal,
a prominent Yiddish Journalist
and Jewish communal leader, died
here Sept. 8 at age 76. He had
been editor of the Chicago edition
on the Jewish Daily Forward for
many years.
Born in Poland, Mr. Segal emigr-
ated to this country in 1906. He
was active in the affairs of the
United Jewish Appeal, ORT, the
Jewish Labor Committee and
various Jewish labor groups.

British Historian Dies

LONDON (JTA) — Dr. Sophia
Witzman, the official historian of
the British government, died here
Sept. 20. Born in London, she
studied at the University of Man-
chester, headed the history de-
partment of the University of
London Institute of Education, and
was a foremost authority on Indian
history.
At the time of her death Dr.
Witzman had been working on a
history of education in England
during World War II.

Aid to Nasser—Many
Cheers and the Silence

"When a Russian freighter carry-
ing the first Soviet aid wheat to
Egypt's dictator Nasser entered
the port of Alexandria," Rep. H.
R. Gross (R.-Iowa) reports, "crowds
along the dock cheered, 'Long live
Soviet-U.A.R. friendship.' The ship
carried 8,845 tons of wheat pur-
chased by the Soviet Union from
Australia. A few hours earlier, an
American freighter sailed out of
the same port after unloading
24,000 tons of United States wheat.
