The textile industry at Dimona is expanding rapidly with the
aid to Israel Bonds. Shown here are workers at the Dimona Fibers
plant, which employs 650 persons on three shifts and utilizes 56
spinning machines of the latest design with 24,000 spindles to manu-
facture cotton fiber. The textile factory also produces synthetic fibers
and mixtures of synthetic and natural fibers for yarns and fabrics.
Built in 1960 with Israel Bond allocations, the plant exports 60
per cent of its production. It is one of the major industrial enter-
prises which have been constructed since Dimona was established
as a Negev development town ten years ago.

David Rubin is well qualified to
write a novel whose characters and
settings are related to India. He
has taught English at several col-
leges, including two in India—at
the Universities of Allahabad and
Jaipur. He is presently teaching
in this country at Sarah Lawrence
College.
In "Cassio and the Life Divine,"
published by Farrar, Straus and
Giroux (19 Union Sq. W., NY 3),
his chief character is Peter Cassio,
a half Jew, whose Jewish back-
ground and associations with some
Jews and a non-Jew who desires
to convert to Judaism, frequently
crop up.
The chief factor in the story is
the Swami whose cult influences
many of the characters, with whom
Cassio also becomes involved.
There are love affairs, factors
of marital complications, family
involvements, Cassio's back-
ground and his kinsmen.
Interesting if complicated views
of human values enter into the
numerous discussions. There are
dialogues along these lines in the
novel that are sup e r b , and the
author's splendid style make this
a good novel. There is a chase for
a girl desired by Cassio, and there
is the Swami's "spook racket" that
weaves well into the narrative.
The numerous episodes in the

story bring Cassio in contact with
a variety of characters.
The son of a Neapolitan father
and a Greek-Jewish mother, Cas-
sio's family, including his brother
and sister as well as his parents'
relationship, is described as fol-
lows:
"We were brought up Catholic
because Pops said he didn't want
to be the only Papist in Carris-
brooke; it was enough for Mam-
ma to be the only Jew, but the
Church (which meant a five-
mile bike ride to St. Francis' in
Millbridge, that was the best of
it) never got us hooked and I
guess for all the simplicity of
our lives we were a fairly pagan
crew. We had a dim sense (be-
cause Pops was Neapolitan) that
compassion was more important
than justice and (because Mam-
ma was Jewish) one shouldn't
count on much of either in the
world, and the three of us, Ma-
rina, John and I, being the sort
of hardy hybrids we were, didn't
give religion a second thought
after we all stopped going to
church when John was 14, Ma-
rina and I 12."
Such is the commentary on mix-
ed results of an intermarriage. And
there also is a brief discussion of
name-changing and of escapism.
When Cassio's friend Morton Ber-
ger decides to change his name to
Marton Burgess there is this inter-
change:
Cassio calls the change "an irra-
tional intuition," Mort says "there
is no such thing," and Cassio re-
plies:
"If you've found illumination
what the hell difference does your
name make?" and Mort's "usual
way of logic was expressed in:
"Exactly, so why not change it?
The half of you that's Jewish
doesn't show in your name. If you
hadn't signed your name Cohen-
Cassio at Columbia, who would
have known?"
And Cassio replied: "God and
I. Who cares who knows what? If
you don't want to be a Jew, don't
be one—it's up to you alone and
it ought to matter to you alone."
Thus, in "Cassio," Rubin intro-
duces an interesting Jewish angle
while dealing with cultism, loves,
religious conflicts, human ele-
ments. Rubin writes well and tells
his story well.

WASHINGTON (JTA)—Indian
Ambassador B. K. Nehru, appear-
ing before the National Press
Club, indicated that India sees
no contradiction in its support of
Arab claims to revert the Israeli
borders to the 1947 Partition Plan
as against India's refusal to adjust
the Kashmir boundaries.
Nehru said that India's policy
is to support the status quo of
boundaries or change according to
a particular case. He strongly op-
posed a change in the Kashmir
boundary.
He made the comments in re-
sponse to a question from the
audience, seeking an explanation
of how India's Kashmir border
stand squared • with her backing
of Arab boundary claims against
Israel.
