High Holy Day services to be
conducted by two Jewish chaplains
for the growing number of Jewish
military personnel in war-torn
South Vietnam are part of the
worldwide arrangements made by
the National Jewish Welfare Board
for the observance of Rosh Hash-
anah and Yom Kippur, it was an-
nounced by Rabbi Israel Miller,
chairman of JWB's Commission on
Jewish Chaplaincy.
Similar services will be held for
Jewish GIs deployed in more than
40 other countries, as well as in
Military and naval installations
and Veterans Administration facil-
ities across the United States, in
Arctic outposts and on maneuvers
aboard transports and warships on
the high seas.
Large quantities of religious sup-
plies sent to South Vietnam by
JWB were on hand when Navy
Chaplain Robert Louis Reiner, new-
ly assigned to the 3rd Marine Divis-
ion, arrived to conduct High Holy
Day services for Jewish Marine
personnel encamped in the hills
ringing the Danang Air Base.
Chaplain Richard E. Dryer, Jew-
ish chaplain on duty with the U.S.
Armed Forces in Vietnam since
February 1965, was well-supplied
with religious and comfort items
by JWB, as have Jewish chaplains
in all other places where High Holy
Day services will be held for U.S.
military and naval personnel.

Jewish Draftees
Get Deferments
for Holy Days

The National Jewish Welfare
Board's Commission on Jewish
Chaplaincy has been advised by
the Selective Service Commission
that all draft boards have been
asked to give "favorable" con-
sideration, whenever possible" to
requests from Jewish registrants
for postponement of their physical
examination or induction into the
Armed Forces during the coming
Jewish High Holy Days.
This official word was received
by Rabbi Israel Miller of the Kings-
bridge Heights Jewish Center,
Bronx, N.Y., commission chairman,
from Brig. Gen. Lewis B. Hershey,
director of the Selective Service
System, in the form of Operations
Bulletin No. 81, amended as of
June 18, 1965, and addressed to
draft boards throughout the coun-
try.
Bulletin No. 81 applies to Rosh
Hashanah (Sept. 27 and 28), the
Jewish New Year; Yom Kippur
(Oct. 6), the Day of Atonement,
and Sukkot (Oct. 11-19), the Feast
of Tabernacles. Since all the Holy I
Days commence at sundown of the I
day previous to these dates, Bull-
etin No. 81 states that "normally,
the registrant's physical examina-
tion or induction should be post-
poned to a date following the reli-
gious holiday involved."
