This cartoon is reproduced from "A Picture Parade of Jewish History" by Morris Epstein, pub-
lished by Shengold Publishers, New York, by special arrangement with the author and publishers.

Explaining the cartoon, Dr. Ep-
stein wrote:
The basic textbook of Jewish law
and thought after the Bible is the
Mishnah. In its six volumes are
gathered all the laws which had
been taught orally by teachers to
their students for centuries. The
man whose life work consisted of
editing, compiling, and classifying
this body of law was Rabbi Judah
Ha-Nasi.
"Ha-Nasi" means "the Prince."
Rabbi Judah is also called "Rabenu
Ha-Kadosh" (our holy teacher).
These titles show what an impres-
sion he made on those who knew
him.
According to tradition, he was
born on the day Rabbi Akiba died
in 135 CE. This coincidence was
taken to symbolize the unbroken
chain of Jewish learning. A de-
scendant of Hillel, he succeeded

his father, Rabbi Gamliel II, as
head of the Sanhedrin.
He was also the political leader
of the Palestinian Jewish commu-
nity. The Temple was gone, and
close relations had to be main-
tained with the Roman authorities.
They respected Judah the Prince
for his wisdom and for the dignity
with which he conducted himself.
A wealthy man, • he distributed
his funds freely to the poor. His
main interests were in study and
in his beloved pupils. "I learned
much from my teachers," he once
said, "much more from my com-
rades, and most of all from my
students." His greatest achievement
was the preparation of the Mish-
nah. With the help of his pupils
and colleagues, he completed the
task about the year 200 CE.
The Mishnah is written in He-
brew, for Judah loved the Holy
Tongue and insisted on speaking
only Hebrew with his family and
friends despite the fact that Aram-
aic was then the common language
of the Jewish people.
In its final form the Mishnah
consists of six sections, or orders.
The six sections, known as Sedarim,
are divided into 63 tractates or
treatises; each treatise is subdi-
vided into chapters and each chap-
ter is further subdivided into para-
graphs.
Each order of the Mishnah deals
with a large area of Jewish life,
such as Festivals, Civil and Crim-
inal Law, Laws of Agriculture, and
so on.
Although the Mishnah consists

mainly of laws, it occasionally pre-
sents a story or a wise saying of
a rabbi. It also contains a section
called Ethics of the Fathers, in
which are gathered wonderful
teachings of the rabbis concerning
honest living and proper behavior.
Judah Ha-Nasi died shortly after
the Mishnah was done. He was the
last of the Tannaim, the teachers
and rabbis of the first two cen-
turies who participated in the de-
velopment of the Mishnah, and
his death brought to a close a great
period of Jewish scholarship.
