HOLLYWOOD—Josef Auerbach, a veteran film producer for almost 50 years. who guided "Ecstasy." the first Hedy Lamarr picture (when the actress' name was still Hedy Kiesler). in Czechoslovakia in the early 1930s, fled to South America when Hitler rose to power, made a comeback in Hollywood with the re-release of "Our Gang" comedies, and won an Academy Award last year for his French-made . short subject "Chagall," now is execu- live of the million-dollar feature, "The Theft of the Mona Lisa." Cur- rently before the cameras in Paris and Rome, the film has Oscar-win- ner George Chakiris co-starring with French-Czech actress Marina Vlady under Michael DeVille's di- rection. Auerbach said the original screenplay, written by Vienna-born Hollywoodian Walter Reisch, is based on the 1911 theft from the Louvre of the Da Vinci masterpiece which brought out police in every country of Europe and created a worldwide sensation. * Kirk Douglas, due to the extended shooting schedule in Israel of "Cast a Giant Shadow," a Mirisch picture in which he essays the part of Col. Mickey Marcus, had to cancel his guest star appearance in Paramount's "Is Paris Burning?" as General George S. Patton, hero of World War II. Paul Graetz, producer of "Is Paris Burning?" announces that Orson Welles has been signed for the role of the Swedish consul general who convinced De Gaulle that the German commander was willing to save the city against the orders from Hitler. Joseph E. Levine is producing, in England, "The Idol," with scenes to be photographed on location as well as in the studios of London. Serving under Levine as acting producer is Leonard Lightstone with director Daniel Petrie guid- ing such players as Kim Stanley, John Leyton and Michael Parks (the latter the "Adam" from De- Laurentiis' "The Bible"). "The Idol" is based on a story by Ugo Liberatore with a screenplay by Millard Lampell who dramatized "The Wall" for Broadway five years ago. Janet Margolin will not forget her first scene in Joe Levine's "Nevada Smith" currently before the cameras in Mammoth, Calif. The sensitive young actress, most recently a Jewish refugee in "Mori- turf,'' had a 3 a.m. call on location in the California Sierras, at an elevation of 8,300 feet, to the off- stage accompaniment of 300 bellow- ing cattle. At four o'clock in the morning she was involved in a knife fight between Steve McQueen (portraying Nevada Smith) and villain Martin Landau. Milton Berle has re-negotiated his 30-year NBC-TV contract to a non-exclusive basis and now re- turns to television in a big way, with six shows already set and three pending. Hostile Crowd Squelches Aussie Neo-Nazi's Speech MELBOURNE NE JTA)—The first public rally was held here Tuesday by the Australian National Party. Complete with jackbooted and brown-shirted troopers, the meet- ing in a Melbotu-ne public park, lasted exactly 15 minutes before a continued uproar from a hostile crowd forced its closing. The principal speech was de- livered by Juris von Rand, "state leader" and national organizing, secretary of the Australian neo- Nazis. He outlined his party's "policy" from a mound bedecked with swastika-painted rocks. Von Raand, who came to Australia from Germany eight years ago, said that one of his party's main aims was "to justify many of Hitler's poll cies." He said that Hitler "was not as evil as he was painted." Concerning Jews, he said his party was "not violently anti- Semetic, but we don't believe that anything like six million Jews were killed in Germany and, anyway, most of them were probably criminal types or diseased." That quadruple threat to the music profession, MANTOVANI, conductor, composer, arranger and violinist, brings his renowned con- cert orchestra to Detroit's Masonic Auditorium for a single perform- ance on Oct. 9.
