Arthur Goldberg's Views Parallel Those of Government,
Without 'Brainwashing' His Background on Zionism

UNITED NATIONS, N.Y. (JTA)
— Asserting that he has not
"brain-washed" himself from his
known status as a Zionist, Ambass-
ador Arthur J. Goldberg, chairman
of the United Nations delegation
to the United Nations, asserted
here Sept. 9 that, as Washington's
representative, he will concern
himself more with his govern-
ment's position on Arab-Israeli
issues, rather than his own 'pri-
vate' views.
The question arose at a luncheon
in his honor by the United Na-
tions Correspondents Association,
where, among other subjects, he
was asked: "You have been char-
acterized as a Zionist. Is it accu-
rate? How would this affect your
work here at the United Nations?
"I have not brainwashed myself,"
he replied. "At the United Nations,
my views on the Arab-Israel ques-
tion will be the views of my gov-
ernment. The question is an ir-
relevancy. The real question is:
What is the United States position?
I have expressed myself on many
issues in my personal life. I am still
the same man I was before. The
American position is friendship
with all countries in the Middle
East to help them work out their
destiny. What I said privately does
not conflict with this position of
the United States. I have never
said anything different in my
private capacity."
Israeli Raps UN for Failing
to Halt Threats to Peace
OTTAWA (JTA) — The failure
of the United Nations to deal ef-
fectively with threats to peace
was deplored here by David Haco-
hen, chairman of the Israeli parlia-
ment's foreign affairs and defense
committee; in an address before
650 parliamentarians from 60 coun-
tries assembled here at the confer-

ber of his country's delegation to
the United Nations General As-
sembly, charged that the UN has
failed in its main purpose, under
the first article of the UN Charter,
which calls for the maintenance
of international peace and secur-
ity through collective measures
against aggression. He said that
what the Charter means "is not
only rushing a UN army between
beligerents, but the settlement of
disputes by peaceful means." He
pointed out that international dis-
putes "are prevailing in the four

John M. Allegro's new book,
"The Shapira Affair," which dis-
cusses the sensational Dead Sea
Scroll fragment forgery of 1883,
is taken to task in a recent article
in of the Jewish Quarterly Review
written by Dr. Oskar K. Rabinow-
icz.
Dr. Rabinowicz makes references
to earlier writings by Prof. Mena-
hem Mansoor and Dr. J. L. Teicher,
stating that Allegro's book "basic-
ally repeats" and "one wonders
why a new work on this old issue
should have been published at all.
Particularly, as it does not add
a single unknown fact."
By posing hypothetical argu-
ments, Dr. Rabinowicz writes,
"Allegro has attained what he
intended: to leave in the read-
ers' mind the thought of a link
between the Qumran Scrolls and
the Shapira fragments."
In describing the fragments,
"Allegro does not enter into a
serious analysis of the grammat-
ical, orthographical and textual
critcisim which the scholars at
the time had made. To concentrate
all the guns on the external fact-
ors which today are not controll-
able any more because the wherea-
bouts of the strips is unknown,
and to omit this important aspect
of the whole issue can surely not
be accepted as a scholarly ap-
proach for a demand at reopening
the case."
Condemning the sensationalism
that puts such "finds" in the lime-
light, Dr. Rabinowicz writes "there
is evidence available since over
20 years which shows beyond any
shred of doubt that Shapira and
his friend Salim had planned and
executed the for g e r y of the
Deuteronomy fragments in Jeru-
salem."

corners of the earth, yet they
continue unchecked." He said "the
UN has proved itself unable to
cope adequately not only with
breaches of the peace but even
with threats to peace. This im-
potency has a corrosive effect on
the UN Organization."
According to the Israeli, "the
very halls constructed for the pur-
pose of promoting peace echo with
the shameless exposition of the
schemes of one member state to
attack and destroy another, in flag-
rant violation of the Charter's basic
tenets. Such a spectacle takes place
while a sophisticated world watches
inattentively — hoping it can carry
on business as usual."
(A report from Tel Aviv said
Arab infiltrators opened fire at a
train leaving the outskirts of Jeru-
salem for Tel Aviv Sept. 10, wound-
ing an Israeli girl. The action
followed reprisals by Israel for
earlier Arab sabotage in Israel.)
Golda Meir to See
British Government Leaders
LONDON (JTA) — Mrs. Golda
Meir, Israel's Foreign Minister, will
make a two-day stopover in Lon-
don, en route to the United Nations,
for talks with British Cabinet mem-
bers and leading figures of the
British Jewish community. Official-

ly, however, her visit will be
"private."
Arrangements for her meetings
with Cabinet members may in-
clude talks with Michael Stewart,
the British Foreign Secretary who
will be returning from Warsaw,
and with George Thomson, the Sec-
retary of State of Foreign Affairs.
Thomson is scheduled to leave
shortly afterwards for Cairo and
Rhiad. Since there are no specific
urgent problems now between
Britain and Israel, Mrs. Meir's talks
are expected to be of a general
nature about issues likely to arise
at the General Assembly, where
she will head the Israeli delega-
tion.

Much Folklore
Accumulated in
`Torah Thoughts'

"Torah Thoughts" by Leo Gar-
tenberg apepars in a second vol-
ume. It has been published by
Jonthan David (131 E. 23rd, NY
10), and it is a compilation of
legends, stories, anecdotes and fa-
mous sayings from Hebrew and
Yiddish literature.
There are literally hundreds of
such sayings and stories, and the
book has the merit of serving as a
guide to Jewish folklore, as means
to read at will, for as short a period
as possible, always enabling read-
ers to pick it up and to be en-
lightened.. It can be read again and
again and the Wisdom literature
incorporated in the volume is im-
mensely valuable and interesting.
There are personal recollections
by the author of trips to Israel and
other experiences.
Many sources are resorted to in
the accummulation of these stories.
The variety of the contents is so
extensive that the author has well
earned acclaim for his work.

YOUP family!

Why? Because families like yours which use vegetarian beans
wouldn't buy any kind but Heinz. As you know well, switching from
one brand of a product to another is almost the style these days. Then
how come the unswitchability of H.V. B.? Is it the*©seal that makes
the big difference? Or the delightful flavor of the tomato sauce? Or
the popularity of H.V. B. with the children? Or the confidence
in the name Heinz? Maybe it's all four reasons! Could be!
