Eshkol Appointment Upsets Politicians (Direct JTA Teletype Wire to The Jewish News) JERUSALEM — Premier Levi Eshkol's surprise appointment of Isser Harel, former Israeli intel- ligence chief, as his general advisor evoked a political storm in Israel Wednesday. The appointment of Harel, who led Israel's search for Nazi killer Adolf Eichmann and who was ousted two years ago as chief of Israel's secret security services in a dispute with then-Premier David Ben-Gurion, brought him into the public eye for the first time. Pub- lication of his name as security chief had been officially forbidden. In the debate over handling the problem of West German scientists working on advanced weapons sys- tems for Egypt, Ben-Gurion fa- vored minimal protests to avoid embarrassing the West German re- gime with which he was negotiating for arms for Israel. Harel favored vigorous measures, including a press campaign. Harel was forced out after an Is- raeli government employe was ar- rested in Switzerland on charges of threatening the daughter of one of the West German scien- tists. The opposition parties, including Ben-Gurion's Independent Israel Workers List, charged that the ap- pointment amounted to dragging Israel's intelligence affairs into party politics. Harel, as the pre- mier's general adviser, will over- see both military and nonmilitary intelligence. It was reported that after the election, if Premier Esh- kol wins, he will be named direc- tor general of the premier's office. 1111 ■ 11=1111 ■ 1=1Mili.
