Sherman Imparts 'Gift of Laughter' in Autobiography

On Aug. 6, 1962, Allan Sherman,
an unemployed television produc-
er, picked up his weekly relief
check at the Hollywood office of
the state unemployment agency.
Later in the day, he recorded an
album of folk-song parodies at a
studio. Eight weeks later, it was
released as "My Son, the Folk
Singer." Overnight it became a na-
tional sensation. Sherman awoke
to find himself rich, famous, the
possessor of six agents and a
business manager and a concert
booker who was booking him into

Henry

Carnegie Hall. He also suffered a
nervous breakdown, a heart attack
and a severe case of neurotic
anxiety.
His autobiography, "A Gift of
Laughter," will be published by
Atheneum this fall. It is a so-called
show business autobiography; yet
it is like no earlier specimen of
this genre, for it is relentlessly un-
sparing of everything — including
Allan Sherman. Sherman takes
nothing seriously, least of all him-
self. He casts a sardonic and sar-
castic eye over all experience.

"A Gift of Laughter" is also a
merry case history in the Ameri-
can success syndrome. It begins
with a strange and bittersweet
childhood in a broken home. Adol-
escence is followed by college and
love, the army, marriage, writing
songs, being a failure and starv-
ing in New York, psychoanalysis
and making money in television,
and a flight to the suburbs.
The title is from the famous
opening line of Scaramouche: "He
was born with the gift of laughter
and a sense that the world was
mad."

LISTENING

HARRY KOLTONOW proudly
displays a chandelier at his North-
west Electric Supply that interior
decorators will go ga-ga over ..
In fact, of the more than a thou-
sand fixtures on display, it is the
only one not for sale! . . . The
gorgeous piece hung in a syna-
gogue bombed out in Prague dur-
ing World War II . . . The fixture,
estimated by Harry to have been
made in the 1700s, was smashed
and brought over from Europe by
an antique dealer . . . Harry had
it restored and has refused a
$1,000 offer for it . . . It hangs
by itself in majestic elegance as
befitting such a true work of art
. . . An oddity of the fixture is
the Stars of David that surround
it . . . All have eight points which,
it is noted in architectural history,
crops up every so often instead of
the usual six . . . There has never
been an accounting for this.
* * *
AMERICANS ARE GETTING
stronger . . . Twenty years ago it
took two people to carry $10
worth of groceries .. . Today our
four-year-old son, Scott, can do it.
* * *
MICHAEL WOOLF from Pas-
saic, N.J., civil defense commis-
sioner for Passaic County, is visit-
ing and staying with brother
Sammy and wife Ann . . . First
thing he did was to. check out the
basement to see if the shelter was
properly stocked! . . . While pick-
ing up Michael from Metropolitan
Airport, Ann had grandsons,
Randy, 6, and Scott, 21/2, sons of
Dr. Roy and Jackie Woolf . . .
Waiting for the plane to arrive,
Ann sent them looking in coin
slots of telephone booths all over
the airport . . . She put pennies
in a few, and Randy came out
screaming when he found a dime
she had placed in one . . . But
grandma's way of keeping them
occupied has turned into what is
a continuous game . . . Now every
time they see anything even re-
sembling a phone or coin slot,
they rush over to find out if any
money has returned!
* * *
DON APEL at Bauman-Roggin
Insurance, likes this one . . . about
a man going into an insurance of-
fice to report his car stolen and
that he would like to get his
money . . . The insurance execu-
tive was polite but firm, "Sorry,
we do not give you the money,
we replace the car with a new
one.". . . The man answered in-
dignantly, "If that's the way you
do business, you can cancel the
policy on my wife."
* * *
IT WAS ELLEN MAZELS' first
baby-sitting job . . . Everything
went fine except for one slight
oversight, as she explained later
to her mother, Ruth . . . Said
Ellen, "The lady showed me where
the TV was, where to find the pop
and the potato chips and even
the candy .. . But it wasn't until
I heard someone crying that I
realized she'd forgotten to tell me
where to find the baby."
* * *
SEEING SIGNS . . . by Ben
Fireman in a taxicab .. . "Please
do not discuss politics with me.
My specialty is astrophysics."

* * *

DISC JOCKEY Jack Spector in
New York was broadcasting one
Yam Kippur ... A shocked gentle-
man called him during the pro-
gram and said, "How can you, a
nice Jewish boy, be working on
Yom Kippur?" . . . "I'm not work-
ing," Jack replied. "I'm on tape."
"Oh, excuse me," said the caller.
"I didn't know."
