Council Draft on Jews to Sit ntil 1966? (Direct JTA Teletype Wire to The Jewish News) ROME—Publication by the Vatican press office of the agenda for the fourth session of the Ecumenical Council, which opens Tuesday, raised the possibility that final action on the draft declaration on Catholic-Jewish relations may not take place until early next year. The agenda is divided into Bill in Italy Would Force two parts. A two-thirds parliamen- tary majority will be required to approve the bill. At the same time, a draft of a bill to enact an Italian law in support of Italy's 1952 ratifica- tion of the International convex'. tion Against Genocide was dis- tributed in parliament. A parlia- mentary commission drafted the bill this summer. The Italian anti-genocide bill would provide severe punishment for all forms of aggressive acts against ethnic, racial, national and religious groups when such acts are clearly meant to destroy the target group either partly or com- pletely. Crimes listed in the bill include enforced living conditions likely to cause partial or total destruction of the affected group, deportation, impeding or restrict- ing the fertility of the group by sterilization, forcibly taking chil- dren from their parents and en- forcing the wearing of discrimina- tory devices by persecuted groups. The penalty for conviction of such crimes is long prison terms up to life imprisonment if the victims perish as a result of the crime. There is no capital punish- ment in Italy. European Cancer Experts to Gather in Rehovot REHOVOT— Some 115 leading European and Israeli scientists will meet at the Weizmann Insti- tute Sept. 13-16, to survey progress and plan future research in the > field of virus-caused cancer. Vatican sources said the fact that the draft on Jews is last on the agenda did not necessarily mean it would be voted last, since a timetable remains to be estab- lished. But it was indicated that the declaration on the Jews prob- ably will be the final item when the timetable is fixed. The Vatican press office an- nouncement was, in effect, an au- thoritative denial of rumors and reports that the declaration on the Jews would not be on the agenda. The question of the length of the session developed when an authoritative source said that Pope Paul VI hoped the final session would be finished by Christmas. That report was viewed as raising the possibility that the fourth ses- sion might go into- the first weeks or months of 1966.
