Tells How Jewish
Treasure Saved

Editor, The Jewish News:
In your issue of Aug. 27, there
is an article "Czech Jewish Treas-
ures to Be Shown in W. Berlin."
The article ends, "The collection
survived the Nazi occupation of
Czechoslovakia only because Hit-
ler intended to establish a "Mu-
seum of Liquidated Races."
Please allow me to add to this
tragic story, as a live witness and
a citizen of the capital, Prague, for
27 years. The treasure from Bohe-
mia and Moravia and the collec-
tions from all Nazi-occupied lands
from Berlin to Vienna and Leip-
zig, all the valuable items of gold,
silver, antiques, religious articles,
especially 2,000,000 valuable books
from all the museums, were
brought to Prague in 194142 and
transferred to Theresienstadt.

There, a "Talmud" Hundert-
schaft was created, in which all
the scholars worked to create an
album and catalogue of these
priceless treasures which go
back to 800 A.D. I even saw
hand-written scripts of the "Ram-
barn," Maimonides.

But please, dear editor, the col-
lection survived not only because
Hitler intended to establish a
"Museum of Liquidated Races." It
was the "rosh Hagols" Jacob Edel-
stein who manipulated and plan-
ned carefully with us few gladia-
tors from Prague at a meeting in
October 1939, even while Adolph
Eichmann was standing by and
giving orders for the liquidation
of "Jewish Aussidlung."
Our plan worked perfectly even
though the hero, Jacob Edelstein,
was sacrificed and brutally killed
with his wife and children by the
Nazis.
But the priceless Jewish treasure
survived. Our method was to slow
down the work with a daily hope
that tomorrow maybe would bring
freedom for our suffering and the
survival of the thousand years of
valuable Jewish heritage and treas-
ure.
