Mishkan Israel in Shape for the High Holy Days Beth Aaron Has Full-Time Cantor, Moses Serensen Beth Aaron Synagogue has en- gaged Cantor Moses Serensen as its new full-time cantor, succeed- ing Cantor David Bagley. An- nouncement was made by Joseph Sulkes, president of the congrega- tion. Cantor Serensen, who comes to Detroit from Chicago, is a native of Latvia, where he served at a very young age as chief cantor of the Main Syna- gogue in Riga, prior to World War II. He is a graduate of the Polish State Con- servatory of Mu- sic of Wilno, and pursued his post- graduate musical studies in the re- nowned conserv- atories of Milan Serensen and Rome. Cantor Serensen came to this country in 1950 at the suggestion of the American consul in War- saw, who heard him sing and was impressed with the unique range and beauty of his voice. Upon coming to this country, he served as cantor for 10 years at the Beth Israel Synagogue in Milwaukee, succeeding Richard Tucker. During the last five years, he was cantor in Chicago. Cantor Serensen has already be- gun his duties with Beth Aaron. He will officiate at all major serv- ices on the High Holy Days and all Sabbaths. He will also be as- sisted by a choir, which he is train- ing for the High Holy Days. Limited to 25 students each London Synagogues Advised to Set Up Defense Patrols Before High Holidays (Direct JTA Teletype Wire to The Jewish News) LONDON — The Board of Depu- ties of British Jews advised Lon- don synagogue officials Wednesday to make arrangements for volun- teer patrols to guard their build- ings from vandals at night, parti- cularly during the coming High Holy Days. The board's action indicated that Jewish authorities had come to the conclusion that British Jewry could not rely solely on the police to protect synagogues from hooligan- ism. During the seven months of 1965, it was noted 11 synagogues have been the targets of arson at- tacks and in only one case has there been an arrest. The board asked its members to volunteer for such guard duty. Such patrols have been set up for some syna- gogues since the rash of arson and vandalism began 11 months ago, but such arrangements have been only on an individual synagogue basis. MIZRACHI TOURS TSRPIE Some experts were reported as believing that the attacks on synagogues and a reported 55 instances of anti-Semitic poster placements and daubings did not stem from a central organiiation.
