Israel's Ambassador to Rome Dies at 62 • ROME (JTA)—Maurice Fischer, the Israeli ambassador to Italy, died today in a Swiss clinic at the age of 62. The career diplomat came to Palestine in 1930 from Belgium, where he was born, and fought in the Free French Forces during World War II. After the establishment of Israel, he served as ambassador to France and, later, Turkey. Before his appoint- ment to the Rome post, in 1961, he was assistant director-general of the ministry for foreign affairs ! in Jerusalem. Nathalie Wezelman Dies, 42 Nathalie Gandal Wezelman, 42, of Bismarck, N. D., sister of Mrs. Philip Slomovitz, died Aug. 19. Funeral services were held Aug. 210 in Bismarck's Bnai Ephraim Synagogue. Surviving are her husband, Sol .Wezelman, vice president of the Provident Insurance Co.; a daugh- ter, Joy; a brother, Henry Gandal of Cleveland; and two other sis- ters, Mrs. Israel Goldman of Balti- more and Mrs. Yosef Schub of Chicago. Psychiatrist Dead; Aided Nazi Camp's Victims NEW YORK (JTA) — Dr. John W. Thompson, a psychiatrist known as an authority on the "survivor syndrome" of former concentration camp inmates, died of a heart attack at age 59, while vacationing in the Virgin Islands. An assistant professor of psy- chiatry at the Albert Einstein College of Medicine of Yeshiva University here, Dr. Thompson served as chairman of the Corn- mittee for the Rehabilitation of Victims of Manmade Disasters, which was successful in encourag- ing the West German government to reopen compensation cases for concentration camp victims whose claims had been rejected. In 1946, he founded a thera- peutic community near Paris for concentration camp survivors, mostly from Bergen-Belsen. A British subject, Dr. Thompson joined the Royal Canadian Air Force as a medical officer in 1941, and was among the first troops to liberate the concentration camp of Bergen-Belsen. Martin Dworkis Dies; Manhattan College Head NEW YORK (JTA)—Dr. Martin B. Dworkis, president of Manhattan Community College, died of a heart attack Aug. 21 at age 46. Dr. Dworkis, born and educated in New York, was active in civic as well as educational affairs. He was known as an expert in govern- mental affairs and as an author on these subjects. He received the Jewish War Veterans Award in 1961. Sam Drapkin Dies at 54; Sally Fields' Brother Sam Drapkin, brother of El Al public relations manager Sally Fields of Detroit, died Sunday in New York. He was 54. Mr. Drapkin leaves two sisters besides Mrs. Fields: Ginger Blair of New York and Mirion Gross- light of Detroit; and a brother Sol Drapkin of Detroit. Jewish Educator Dies at 84 PASSAIC, N. J. (JTA) — Harry Haindler, a founder and former president of the Hebrew Principals Association and a former member of the Licensing board for Hebrew teachers, died of a heart attack here. He was 84. A graduate of the Wayne University Medical School, he belonged to Phi Lambda Kappa medical fraternity and the Wayne County and Michigan State medi- cal societies. He also was active in the Jewish Parents Institute and served on the staffs of Holy Cross and Saratoga Hospitals. Rome Dies Theodor Herzl Rome, president of Schocken Books, died Aug. 21 of a stroke at Ellsworth Hospital in Maine. His home was in Scarsdale, N. Y., and he had a summer home on Cranberry Island near Ells- worth. He was responsible for the ap- pearance of many important Jew- ish classics, in hard and paper covers, since he took control of Schocken publishing house in 1959. He was a painter and book illus- trator, was graduated with honors from Harvard College in 1936 and painted in Palestine and Syria be- fore Israel's statehood.
