`The Fatal Eggs'
Contains Subtle
Russian Satire
" The Fatal Eggs' and Other
Soviet Satire" is a most revealing
anthology. Edited and translated
by Mirra Ginsburg, published by
Macmillan, this volume contains
a large collection of short stories
by a group of Russian writers.
The narratives are satirical. They
are entertaining and offer excel-
lent reading material. They also
show how Russian writers often
register their protests against ex-
isting conditions by means of puns,
humor, subtle satirical commen-
taries in the form of stories.
The title of the book derives
from the longest story in the book
— a novelette by Mikhail Bulgakov
(1891-1940). "The Fatal Eggs" was
written in 1925. It was a prediction
of sad days to come in 1928 and
apparently was not forgiven for it.
His death, therefore, was not re-
ported in the Literary Gazette. But
in 1963 he was "rehabilitated" and
his works received due recognition.
The magazine Moskva published
several of his stories and called
him "a writer with a great and
original talent. "The 80-page "Fatal
Eggs" prove it.
There is great merit to the en-
tire collection which includes
stories by 13 writers, one listed as
anonymous. There are brief bio-
graphical notes about all the writ-
ers.
Miss Ginsburg showed keen un-
derstanding of her selection of
stories, some of which can be read
in less than five minutes. Her
translations are excellent. She ex-
plains in her introduction: "My
criteria were: essential value as
literature; good writing; genuine
wit; independence of official pol-
icy; and contemporary reference."
And she adds:
"I chose stories dealing only
With the current scene in Russia,
omitting historical sature or satire
directed at the 'capitalist West' or
America, particularly since the lat-
ter bears the unmistakable stamp
of official policy."
