Synagogue Won't Cater to Residents' Court Charge

NEW YORK — Members of the
East Nassau Hebrew Congregation
in suburban Syosset filed suit Tues-
day in Mineola Supreme Court to
block a bid by residents—most of
them Jewish—for court action to
halt what they later called a "Bar
Mitzvah factory" operated by the
congregation's rabbi.
The ' suit was filed against the
Birchwood Homeowners Associa-
tion which went into the same
court last week seeking an injunc-
tion to stop the synagogue's cater-
ing activities. The counter-s u i t
denied charges that the social ac-
tivities in the synagogue violated
zoning ordinances and constituted
a traffic hazard.
Rabbi Martin Appleman, spirit-
ual leader of the congregation,
insisted that the catering service
was part of the synagogue and

served only members and those
related to members. He denied
charges that the catering service
extended beyond congregation
members and added that none of
his critics belonged to his congrega-
tion.
The counter-suit contended that
spikes had been set in the syna-
gogue driveway, hostile signs were
posted on nearby nawns and hand-
bills were distributed. The syna-
gogue also houses a school for 600
boys and Noam Temple caterers.
