British Labor Union Asks Swastika Stamp Boycott Cheerful Rabbinical Nuggets By DAVID SCHWARTZ (Copyright, 1965, JTA, Inc.) Rabbi Akiba, "the father of rab- binic Judaism" was a late starter. He didn't commence his studies until he was a man of 40. One of his younger colleagues mocked at those "who learn when they are old" but Akiba had the last laugh. Ile is the most quoted figure in the Mishna. * * One of the most cheerful charac- ters of the Talmud was known as Gam Zu Le Tov. Mr. Le Tov was no Frenchman. Actually his name was Rabbi Nahum but he was called Gam Zu Le Tov because he believed that "everything is for the best" which is what the words Gam Zu Le Tov means. This great optimist was paralyzed in both feet. * * When the governor of the prov- ince once came to Warsaw, the clergy of all faiths went out to meet him. The rabbi, representing the Jews, was put at the tail end. The Archbishop asked the rabbi if he wasn't offended at being placed in the back. "No," the rabbi said, "a parent always likes to see his children go ahead in front." * * * Rabbi Isaac M. Wise, when he was a young rabbi in Albany, N.Y., decided to attend a meeting of the clergy called to consider some community problem. When the rabbi rose to give his opinion, the chairman told him to take his seat, saying that the meeting was for Protestant clergymen. FENCE Nobody UNDERSELLS GREAT LAKES "Well," said Rabbi Wise, "I rise to protest, so I am a Protestant." * * * Every Sabbath Rabbi Zev Wolfe's disciples would gather around his table to listen to words of Torah. One time, during the rabbi's dis- course, one m a n pulled out a radish from his pocket and began eating it. There was a whispering commo- tion. "Boor," the man was told, "don't you know better than to eat when the Rabbi gives forth with Torah?" The rabbi soon per- ceived what was going on. For a moment he was silent. Then he said, "You know, I would like a radish too." The culprit beamed with joy as he fished out another radish from Ampal's Israel Loans Total Over $30,000,000 (Direct JTA Teletype Wire to The Jewish News) NEW YORK—Ampal-American Israel Corp. has made $5,840,694 worth of new loans and invest- ments in Israel f r o m February through July 1965, according to a statement made Wednesday by Abraham Dickenstein, president of the company. This brings Ampal's total investments and loans in Is- rael to more than $30,000,000 as of July 31, he said. According to the report, Ampal has completed arrangements for payment of $1,000,000 out of a $2,500,000 loan to the Tel-Aviv municipality. It has also approved a loan of $1,000,000 to Hamashbir Latzarchan, Israel's leading de- partment store chain, and of a $470,000 loan to Yonah Fishing and Industries, Ltd., for the con- struction of a fishing vessel in Hol- land to be named "yam suf" (red sea). Soon all were laughing. * * * In some European towns, the various crafts organized their own synagogues and one time when the great Hasidic rabbi of Berdicheff, Itzchak L e i b, visited a Russian town, the representatives of the Bakers' synagogue went out to welcome him. It is the custom for the visiting rabbi to respond with some words of Torah. However, the Hasidim were not regarded as excelling in knowledge of the Torah and the greeting of the Bakers' synagogue emissaries hinted that they did not e x p e c t too much Torah illumination from the visitor. Replying to the snub Rabbi Itzchak Leib said: "Our sages tell us that when the Messiah comes, man will no longer have to labor for bread. Bread will then grow on trees. God grant, my friends, that the Messiah does not delay His coming, so that we shall not much longer have need for any bakers' synagogues." LONDON (JTA) — The Trans- port and General Workers Union in the Channel Islands revived the controversy over a Battle of Britain commemorative stamp, containing a swastika in its design, by calling for a boycott of the is- sue. The stamp, to be issued Sept. 13, shows a downed German plane with a swastika on its tail. The British government rejected six re- quests in the House of Commons and the House of Lords for with- drawal of the stamp or for a change in the design. The Board of Deputies of British Jews has complained on the issue, without success.
