It has been estimated by Israel ulpan experts that adult's who are not beset by wordly cares are capable of acquiring some 30 He- brew words daily through concen- trated study. In the 30 days of their journey therefore, they would have an opportunity of gaining close on 1,000 Hebrew words which should doubtlessly suffice for an easy conversation in Hebrew, par- ticularly as most of these passen- gers are not entirely strange to the language. Similar applications are being re- ceived also from countries abroad, as far afield as Japan, Vietnam, Burma, Finland, Cuba, etc. The idea of establishing Hebrew courses on board trans-Atlantic liners also came from a number of tourists who found that the time on their hands could be profitably spent in this way. Brit Ivrit Olamit, which is recognized by the government of Israel as a public arm for the dissemination of Hebrew through- out the world, began sending out feelers among trans - Atlantic shipping companies. The first positive reply has come from the Greek line which maintains a fortnightly service during the summer months between New York and Haifa. An agreement has been entered into between that company and Prof. A. Tartakower, chairman of Brit Ivrit Olamit, whereby the lat- ter will provide a cadre of experi- enced teachers to run Beginners' and Advanced Hebrew courses by audio-visual methods, as well as give talks and lectures on topics of Israeli interest. Brit Ivrit has also undertaken to provide text books, film strips and records for the study of the language. The plan provides for two to three hours' tuition daily, the eve- nings to be used for the showing of films on places of historical or topical interest in Israel, or for the community singing of Israeli songs. Tourists to Israel will have an opportunity through the ulpan method of attending a two-months' intensive course of which one will be given at sea, and gain a basic knowledge of the revived language of the Bible, by methods devised in the nuclear age.
