The Pursuit of Peace—Shalom

By David Schwartz

The most widely used word
among Jews is Peace, or Shalom.
Isaiah foresaw the time when
the sword would be turned into a
ploughshare and the lion would lie
down with the lamb.
There is the story of the JeW who
vvas in Moscow and, visiting the
zoo, saw a lion and a lamb in the
same cage. Wonderful, thought the
Jew. The dream of Isaiah is real-
ized. He approached the keeper and
asked how it was made possible.

"Very simple," replied the keep-
er. "We put a different lamb in
the cage every morning."

But the Jewish spirit refuses to
despair. Hillel said: "Be of the
disciples of Aaron, pursuing
peace."
When Aaron, say our sages,
would see two people quarreling,
he would approach one and say,
"You know, Old Fellow, I just saw
So and So, and he tells m' you
have been having a little tiff and
he is so sorry about it. He says he
is ashamed to look you straight in
the face." And then Aaron would
approach the other man and say
the same thing to him. And when
the two men who had quarreled
would meet again, they would fall
on each others' necks and embrace.
King David, great in the hearts
of his people and beloved also of
the Lord, was granted many
favors; but one which he ardently
desired was denied him. It had
been his wish to crown his reign
by the building of the Temple but,
since as a warrior he had shed

blood, this was denied him. And
so it was that the Temple was
built by his son, Solomon, who
maintained peace throughout his
reign.

According to Rashi„ the scouts.
who were sent out to study the
Promised Land by Joshua worked
on the principle that the existence
of too expensive armaments of de-
fense was • to be taken as a sign
that such a notion was composed
of cowardly people.

A rabbi, the sagea tell us, once
encountered Elijah on a crowded
thoroughfare and inquired of him
who of the passing throng would
be sure of eternal favor. The pro-
phet pointed to two men who did
not seem to be conspicuously dif-
ferent. The rabbi asked them if
they had any special merit. No,
they said, can't say we are any
different than most people. Maybe
there one little thing. We can't
stand to see people quarreling and,
when we come upon any such, we
always seek to mediate their dif-
erences.

A man should remember that a
soft answer turns away wrath and
increaseth peace, says the Talmud.

A Hassid once said to a rebbe:
You are always urging us to speak
the truth, but how can we do this
and still maintain peace? The
rebbe answered "It is the part
truth that leads away from peace.
The full truth always brings
peace." But one sage of the Tal-
mud says that even if it is neces-
sary to sacrifice the truth for
peace, it should be done.
Peace should begin at home, ac-
cording to the Tractte Sabbath:
"He who makes peace in his own
house is as though he makes peace
for all the people."
The rabbi of Bratzlev thought
that a joyful spirit helped to pro-
mote peace. Sadness, he said, led
to misanthropy and quarrels. The
Bratzlev rabbi also said: "God is
present, whenever a treaty of
peace is signed."

State Fair Offers Activities
to Interest the Children
The Michigan State Fair, which
opens Friday evening, Aug. 27, and
runs through Labor Day, Sept.
6, has fun-filled events for all
ages, from kids to teens to Dads
and Moms to young-at-heart senior
citizens.
Concentrating on the kids:
The big event starts off with
a mile-long downtown Detroit pa-
rade Friday at 8 p.m. on Wood-
ward from Jefferson to Vernor.
They'll enjoy a special "mid-
way" — little rides for little peo-
ple at small price. Some of the
more precocious may like the
swinging sound of Avenue A-Go-
Go, although it's mainly aimed at
the teen crowd.
There is the TV Fun Circus,
which features outstanding acts
with television personalities as
masters of ceremonies. This year
the TV Fun Circus area at the
fair has been enlarged and the
seating capacity doubled to 800.
