Last year's earthquake, striking on the eve of Passover, nearly de- stroyed the aspirations of a group of 30 Jews to build a synagogue — Cong. Beth Sholom. The congregation survived the quake catastrophe thanks to the financial assistance provided by Re- form leaders and congregations. The building contains a sanctuary seating 125, six large classrooms for the Sunday school of 50 chil- dren, a kitchen and a caretaker's apartment. Farewell, Happy Journey and Best Wishes for a Happy Residence in Medinat Israel The Presidium of the Religious Zionists of America Mizrachi Hapoel HaMizrachi extends heartiest wishes to RABBI AND MRS. ISAAC STOLLMAN for a pleasant journey to Israel and for happy and healthy years during their residence in Jerusalem. Rabbi Stollman has been one of the mainstays of our movement for many years. As head of the rabbinical arm of Mizrachi, as our presiding officer during the years when we completed the merger of Mizrachi with Hapoel Ha- Mizrachi, he has been an inspiration to all of us. We are grateful to him for his services, for the great contributions he has made to our movement and to world Zionism. May his hands be strengthened in all his future ac- tivities. The congregation's membership combines a varied background, civilians working for the U. S. Army and Air Force; accountants, transient professionals and busi- nessmen in the State for a brief period and Jewish families serving the military bases. During the past seven years the temple has had several bar mitzvahs and a con- firmation but no weddings. The president of the congrega- tion is Burton Goldberg. The synagogue was founded in September 1958 by a layman, Leon- ard Bazell, a former student at Hebrew Union College-Jewish In- stitute of Religion. In 1960, the congregation af- filiated with the UAHC and was aided in its organizational work by Rabbi Joseph B. The target of the complaints of a group of residents of Syosset was Rabbi Morris Appleman, spiritual leader of the 2,500-member East Nassau Hebrew Congregation. Members of the Syosset Homeown- ers and Birchwood Park Associa- tion made the charges at a meeting of the Oyster Bay town board. An Association member said it was embarrassing for the resi- dents, largely Jewish, to seek ac- tion against a rabbi, "but he is hiding behind a church cloak and we've got to do something about it." They c h a r g e d that Rabbi Appleman had expanded his cater- ing service beyond the needs of his congregation and was violating a zoning ordinance. They expressed concern over mounting automobile traffic resulting from the weekend catering services at the synagogue. Rabbi Appleman denied all the charges, replying that thare was no issue but that the residents "are making a problem." Cong. Beth Joseph Offers Reservations for Holidays Cong. Beth Joseph, Anshei Riz- hin, invites the Jewish community residing in the vicinity to attend High Holy Day services at the synagogue. The air-conditioned synagogue will remain under its present man- agement and direction throughout the year. For seat reservations, visit the synagogue office daily 4-8 p.m. or call UN 4-0982 or UN 2-9731. THE DETROIT JEWISH NEWS 18—Friday, August 20, 1965 II WI I 011101( ON COON BROS.
