Geneva Consultation
of Protestants, Jews
to Be Non-Theological

NEW YORK (JTA)—The Syna-
gogue Council of America made
it clear today that the consulta-
tion in Switzerland, in which 14
Jewish religious leaders from the
United States, Europe and Israel
will participate with a representa-
tive group of Protestant, Anglican
and Orthodox Christian leaders,
would "under no circumstances"
have a theological basis.
The 14 Jewish religious leaders
will represent the Council. The
five-day consultation which will
open Monday, will take place in
Geneva at the building called the
Ecumenical Institute, World Coun-
cil of Churches, Chateau de Bos-
sey.
Before the consultation was con-
vened, the participants represent-
ing each group arrived at a clear
understanding that this consulta-
tion would be a sociological dis-
cussion of the problems which
humanity faces in "The Situation
of Man in the World Today."
The consultation represents the
first occasion that such a broadly
representative group of leaders
from the Jewish religious commun-
ity and the Protestant religious
community will meet to discuss and
evaluate their common concerns
for the world today.

Custom of 'Tashlich'
One of the most entrenched cus-
toms of Rosh Hashanah is Tash-
lich. The pious goes to a lake or
river and symbolically casts his
sins into the water. This practice
when it was first started was
strongly opposed by eminent rab-
bis, but it had a popular hold. As
the Jewish saying puts it, "a MM-
hag brechit a din." (A custom
transcends a law.)

The Rovner-Lachowitcher Aid Society has another "first" to its
long list of achievements on behalf of Israel. By the planting of a
grove of 1,000 trees, the society has inaugurated the new Detroit
Landsmanshaften Forest in Gadot Kibbutz, part of the Detroit
Development area in northern Galilee, only 500 yards from the
Syrian border. The forest undertaken by the Landsmanshaften will
be planted on a protecting dyke, earth wall, erected to protect the
public and children's quarters of the kibbutz against the frequent
Syrian shootings. Shown • in the photo are the officers of the society
presenting an Israel Bond of $500 as a down payment for the grove
to Percy Kaplan, executive director of the Jewish National Fund.
