Baldwin Play Premieres Successfully in Tel Aviv
TEL AVIV (JTA)—A distingu-
ished audience gave an enthusiast-
ic reception Sunday night to the
premiere performance in Israel
of Negro author James Baldwin's
"The Amen Corner."
The play, the first contribution
by a United States company to
the current Israel Festival, fea-
tured a performance by Claudia
McNeil, a Negro actress who was
raised as a foster child by Jewish
parents on New York's East Side.
She received applause both for her
performance and for a curtain
speech, sprinkled with Yiddish ex-
pressions. "I could only wish my
Jewish foster parents could be here
but I believe they are here in
spirit," she said.
The audience included United
States Ambassador Barbour and
Baldwin, who took a curtain call
and introduced Miss McNeil.

LISTENING
IN NORTH HOLLYWOOD re-
cently, Selma Klein stayed with
ex-Detroiter cousin Rosalie Moss.
. . . while Selma prepared dinner
one evening, Rosalie suddenly re-
membered that a close friend's
birthday was the next day . . .
She got in the car and made a
hurried dash to the drugstore to
buy a card . . . When she re-
turned home, she looked crestfal-
len . . . In her rush she had made
an illegal turn and been given a
traffic ticket which would cost her
a $15 .fine . . . After she had be-
rated herself for a few moments,
her face brightened . . . "You
know what I can do?" she ex-
claimed to Selma with an air of
:having saved the situation. "I'll
write on her card, 'Happy Birth-
day—a donation in your name is
being made to the Department of
Motor Vehicles'!"

NOT NEW but cute is the favo-

golf course when suddenly, a young
girl in a wedding gown comes
running across the fairway and
starts screaming at a man on the
15th green ... "George," she cries,
"how could you? Why did you
leave me waiting at the altar?" .
Very patiently the golfer looks up
and replies firmly, "I told you—
only if it rains!"

HIS 'HAND clutching a toy at
Topps, last week, a small boy
demanded with shrill persistence
that his mother buy it for him
. . . When she calmly and firmly
repeated that he could not have
it, he shouted, "Mommy, I never
met a girl as mean as you!" . .
She looked at him thoughtfully
... Then, running her hand over
his head, she said, "You will,
honey, you will."
