Sigmund Romberg's melodious
she explained, pointing out:
"THE STUDENT PRINCE," with
"Our emphasis is on auditory

training, not on lip reading. We
have succeeded in teaching
babies to talk. We go into homes
to provide training for the very
young, in addition to the class
work. I am sure there is no
doubt that Israel is in the fore-
front of such efforts in behalf
of the very young."

When this photograph appeared
on the first page of the April 2
issue of The Jewish News, in the
educational material for the Allied
Jewish Campaign, the teacher of
the deaf child in the photo was
identified by her brother-in-law,
David J. Cohen. She is Mrs. Abra-
ham (Ethel) Cohen, assistant di-
rector of the Micha school for the
deaf in Tel Aviv. She is shown
here giving auditory training to
a youngster.
Mrs. Cohen is a former De-
troiter. Her husband was a social
worker here prior to their settle-
ment in Israel where he is now on
the staff of Malben.
A graduate of Hunter College,
Mrs. Cohen specialized in training
the deaf in studies at the Lexing-
ton School in New York and she
received her Master's degree at
Columbia University while con-
ducting her specialized studies at
the Lexington School. It was with
the help and encouragement of the
late Morris L. Schaver that she
was enabled to pursue her grad-
uate studies.

Mrs. Cohen, here on a brief
visit with her sister, Mrs. Boris
Joffe, and with the David
Cohens, said that while she is
not here on an official visit she
hopes that the story of Micha
school functions she might in-
terest Detroiters in plans for
the urgently needed expansion
to provide training for the very
young in Israel who are afflicted
by deafness. Micha, she said, is
a voluntary school system that
receives. only 10 per cent of its
income from the Israel Ministry
of Education, and she added
that even this meager support
is unique in efforts to assist
youngsters as young as one
year.

we need is a center where
every child will get the train-
ing so urgently needed. At
present we have 86 children in
our nurseries. There is room for
only 30 of them — 10 in each
class — and the others receive
afternoon care on a limited
basis. We plead for generous
and understanding people to
assist us in creating the direly
needed center."
The Israel government, Mrs.

Cohen explained, contributes only
eight pounds—$2.66--a month for
each child's schooling. This, too,
she said, is an unusual participa-
tion for any government any-
where, since schooling in the
Micha nurseries begins in as early
an age as one year, and there
is no government that supports
free educational efforts prior to
kindergarten age. She also said
that each set of hearing aids costs
750 Israeli pounds—$250—and that
in addition to providing children
with such sets it is necessary to
replace parts frequently.
"This requires a large budget,
and the voluntary basis on which
our school is conducted creates
many financial problems for us,"
Mrs. Cohen said, pleading for
kindness wherever aid can be se-
cured.
When the children in the Micha
nurseries conclude their training,
they are enabled to enter the reg-
ular kindergartens, Mrs. Cohen

Micha, Mrs. Cohen said, also
provides lecturers for doctors and
nurses to explain the needs of the
deaf youths. "By providing hear-
ing aids for the very young for
early use, the chances of develop-
ing good speech is fabulous," she
said.
Mrs. Cohen said that the chil-
dren in the Micha nurseries now
include four Arab youngsters and
an Arab teacher is being trained
to assist in reaching out to these
and to other Arab youths who will
be welcomed by Micha.
Those interested in Mrs.
Cohen's most interesting story
about the aid given to the deaf
can reach her during the coming
few days, before her return to
her home in Tel Aviv, at the
homes either of her sister, Mrs.
Joffe, or her brother-in-law, David
J. Cohen.
