ADL Reports Sharp Decline in Bias Against Jews at Winter Resort Hotels NEW YORK (JTA)—Discrimina- tion against Jews in the leading winter resort hotels and motels in the United States has gone down in the last year to 2.1 per cent, as against 14.8 per cent of those surveyed in 1963, the Bnai Brith Anti-Defamation League reported on the basis of a fresh survey con- ducted between November 1964, and March 1965. Noting that the new survey was Conducted after the Civil Rights Act of 1964 had become law, speci- fically barring racial and religious discriminations in places of public accommodation, the ADL revealed it had used the "dual letter test" in evaluating winter resorts in Florida, Arizona, California, Ala- bama, Mississippi, Arkansas, Colo- rado and Idaho. In each case, applications for reservations were sent by three pairs of applicants. In each pair, one was signed with a name that sounded distinctly Jewish, the other apparently non-Jewish. In each set, the letter bearing the Jewish-sounding name preceded the non-Jewish signer by at least 24 or 48 hours, so there would be no question of priority. The report showed that, among 595 winter resorts from which definite replies were obtained, 13 were identified as discriminatory. All of these, stated the report, were in Florida and Arizona, the two states recognized as the winter playgrounds of America. Eight of the discriminators were in Florida, five in Arizona. The ADL noted that, in both states, there have been drops in discrimination since a previous survey conducted in 19 6 3. The Florida group had been diminished from 14.7 per cent to 1.9 per cent. In Arizona; the drop was from 23.9 per cent in 1963 to 5.4 per cent in the last test. - No evidence of discriminatory practices were found among Cali- fornia hotels where, in 1963, nine per cent discriminated against Jews. In the South, where racial turmoil is still boiling over, there was almost no religious discrimina- tion as far back as 1963, the ADL found. There was none at all in Mississippi and Alabama, and only two of 15 winter resorts in Arkan- sas were found to be discrimina- tory against Jews in 1963. Since then, the A D L reported, these Arkansas resorts have dropped the practice as far as Jewish appli- cants were concerned- The responses to the. test s Better Every Way • Better Service • Better Deals "DEXTER CHEVROLET IS THE BEST PLACE TO GET YOUR CAR." Jews in Chicago Area Barred From Home Buying, A.D.L. Survey Shows CHICAGO (JTA)—Housing dis- crimination against Jews in Chi- cago North Shore communities is being kept alive by realtor-initiated restrictions "often practiced with- out the acquiesence or knowledge of home owners," according to a survey made public today by the Anti-Defamation League of Bnai Brith. The league found that more than 13 per cent of approximately 2,100 homes offered for sale through multiple listings of the Evanston-North Shore Real Estate Board barred Jews by printed in- structions—which more than half the home-owners queried by the league had not requested. The board serves hundreds of real estate brokers and salesmen in the area. The letters "ORTR"—an abbre- viation for "owner reserves the right to refuse or reject any and all, offers" — was used in the mimeographed listings to convey a "No Jews" restriction, according to the ADL. In 1959, when an initial ADL survey was made, 20 per cent of the board's listings contained the "ORTR" qualifica- tion. The new survey revealed that "unauthorized social engineering" was carried out in many cases by real estate brokers with no par- ticular bias against Jews who fol- lowed restrictive policies t h e y thought were profitable or wanted. In individual North Shore com- munities, restrictions against Jews ran as high as 60 per cent of the homes listed in Kenilworth; 32 per cent of those in Lake Bluff; 30 per cent in Winnetka; and 29 per cent in Lake Forest. Other figures: Northfield, 24 per cent; Wilmette, 21 per cent; Glenview, 18 per cent; Evanston, 16 per cent; Northbrook, 10 per cent; Deerfield, 7 per cent; Glencoe, 5 per cent, and Skokie, 4 per cent. The league announced it has placed its evidence before the Illinois Division of Registration and Education, which licenses realtors, charging that many of the North Shore firms are guilty of misrepresenting the conditions of sale, thus violating the regula- tions under which they are licensed. Ziprin Comments on 'The Greatest Story Ever Told' By NATHAN ZIPRIN Editor Seven Arts Festival Syndicate When I received an invitation to attend a showing of "The Great- est Story Ever Told," I hesitated to accept it for fear I Might be called to witness a visual record- ing that will prove offensive to Jewish sensibilities. Happily, George Stevens and his associates in United Artists have approached the story of the life of Jesus with a real under- standing of the sensitivities of the Jews, and with an appreciation of the historic realities as opposed to the tragic legends that have ac- cumulated over the years. With a 2,000 year background of religious persecution engen- dered in large part by the allega- tion that the Jews killed Christ, it is no wonder that Jewry should approach "The Greatest Story Ever T old " with a subjectivity that overrides all other consider- ations. There are several aspects to consider.. Point number one is the scene of the confrontation of Jesus and Pilate, the Roman governor. Here no doubt is left that Jesus is considered a political trouble- maker, and that the ultimate re- sponsibility for the • crucifixion is Roman. Pilate clearly says: "I have the power to put you to death or set you free." This follows earlier scenes in which Pilate and Herod express con- cern over the revolutionary as- pects of the spell-binding Jesus. Then take the Sanhedrin scene. the picture clearly portrays the Sanhedrin leadership as a politi- cally corrupt, Quisling-type pup- pet group doing Herod's bidding. Caiaphas, the Sanhedrin leader, is shown as politically beholden to Herod who gave him leadership by shunting aside the more liberal Shemiah. The Sanhedrin trial, itself, is clearly recognizable to the average moviegoer as "rigged." Nicodemus, one of the Sanhedrin members, was not notified in advance of the trial—that an attempt was made to have only those present who would crucify Jesus and thus oblige the Roman civil govern- ment. Nicodemus says: "But many Slatkin's FIVE YEAR SAVINGS CERTIFICATES NOW EARN showed, the ADL declared, that, despite the 1964 Civil Rights Act, the discriminating resorts still find various formulas for rejecting ap- plicants who s e names seemed Jewish. men of the Sanhedrin are not here, men who think as I do. Those who think as I do are not present. Only those who think as you do are present." And, then again, Nicodemus voices the complaint of Jews opposed to the crucifixion when he says "Are we all Romans now that we disregard decency and justice ... hold secret courts and try inno- cent men in the dead of night?" In the end, the Sanhedrin con- demns Jesus, the action that has been the excuse for almost 2,000 years of the charge that the Jews killed Jesus, that Jews were guilty of decicide. Unlike all previous motion- pic- tures, or Passion Play versions, of the life and death of Jesus, "The Greatest Story Ever Told" has seemingly been conceived and pro- duced in the ecumenical spirit of our day. It is very likely that this picture through its mass appeal, and wide dissemination, will do much to dispel- the "Christ killing" charge that has unjustly plagued Jews over the centuries. The picture, itself. is a magnifi- cently photographed story of the life of Jesus from his birth in the manger • to his crucifixion and resurrection. The story naturally follows the New Testament. What gives this version of the life of Jesus piquancy from the Jewish view is the emphasis on his Jew- ishness. It has been produced in what is called the Judaic-Christian tradition. Jesus is most definitely portrayed as a Jew. When he en- ters the Temple, he kisses the mezuzah; he prays in the ancient Hebrew tradition; and he is heard to say, "Hear, 0 Israel, The Lord our God, the Lord is One." "The Greatest Story Ever Told" is the sort of film you would expect from George Ste- vens, the man who produced and directed "The Diary of Anne Frank." Jews Help Construct Cathedral in Brazil RIO DE JANEIRO (JTA) — Dom Jaime Cardinal de Barros Camara, Archbishop of Rio de Janeiro, expressed special thanks to a number of leading Brazilian Jews for their aid in the con- struction of the Central Cathedral here. The project for the dedication of the square in memory of Dr. Weiz- mann was launched several months ago by Dr. Carlos Flexa Ribeiro, then Minister of Education of the State of Guanebara, now a candi- date for the governorship of the state.
