Theater Dates Announced Spain Turns Over Gift
for 'Zulu and the Zayda' to Sephardic - Museum
Producers Theodore Mann and
Dore Schary announced today that
they have leased the New York
Cort Theater for their production
of "The Zulu and the Zayda" star-
ring Menasha Skulnick which will
begin previews on Oct. 18 for an
opening on Nov. 8.
MADRID (JTA)—The Spanish
government turned over to the
Sephardic Museum in the ancient
El Transito synagogue at Toledo
1,000,000 pesetas (about $16,700)
which had been contributed by an
anonymous donor who had identi-
fied himself as a Jew.
The Cart Theater is a happy
omen for the production as it was
the theater that housed Dore
Schary's "Sunrise at Campobello"
for 556 performances and Menasha
Skulnick made his uptown debut
there in "The Fifth Season." Al-
ready the play has been booked
for a number of theater parties.
"The Zulu and the Zayda," writ-
ten by Felix Leon and Howard Da
Silva and based on a short story
by Dan Jacobson, is about a family
in Johannesberg who bring their
Zayda (grandfather, played by
Skulnick) from London to live
with them. His energy, unfamiliar-
ity with the language and customs
of South Africa create problems
for the family.
The donor had sent the money
to Foreign Minister Fernando Ma-
ria Castiella with a letter thank-
ing Spain for its manifestation of
respect for the Jewish religion and
culture.
The El Transisito synagogue
The play will be directed by
Dore Schary and the scenery and
lighting will be designed by Wil-
liam and Jean Eckart.
