Teen-Aged 'Mitzvah Corps' Dedicates

MEXICO CITY — Mexican au-

tion ceremonies were all pretty
unique. The nine boys and nine
girls from New York, New Jersey,
Connecticut, Georgia, Texas, Penn-

sylvania and Arkansas were all
from comfortable families. They
volunteered their time and serv-
ices during their summer vacation
to the tiny, almost forgotten com-
munity of Spanish-speaking Indian
Jews.

Jewish education, the United He-
brew Schools, etc.
I would like to take this oppor-
tunity to commend the United He-
brew Schools for their fine sum-
mer program. The latter enables
students who attend during the
regular school year to improve in
their studies . . . also classes for
excellent students who are cap-
able of doing special work • . . It
also provides for bus transporta-
tion . . . All this for a minimal

The inhabitants of Venta Prieta
have lived in virtual isolation less
than 60 miles from Mexico City.
According to the New York Times,
they "are thought to be the only
peasants in Mexico who leave their
fields idle on Saturday."
Although none of the 120 mem-
bers of the community speaks He-
brew, all are avid Zionists and
long to go to Israel. Services are
rendered in Spanish, with a little
halting reading from the Torah.
Relaxing after a month of mix-
ing cement, painting and planting
trees, the teen-aged volunteers,
who are affiliated with the Na-
tional Foundation of Temple
Youth, junior affiliate of the
Union of American Het Con-
gregations, are vacationing else-
where in Mexico.

JERUSALEM (JTA) — Israel
made very significant progress to-
ward closing its foreign trade de-
ficit in the first six months of
1965, official reports showed. Due
largely to increasing exports of
citrus fruits, Israel's foreign trade
deficit — the difference between
total exports and total imports —
in the period January-June of 1965
amounted to $172,000,000.
That figure is 25 per cent below
the trade gap in the comparable
period of 1964. The total exports
of citrus fruits the first six months
of this year amounted to $230,000,-
000, as compared with $196,000.-
000 during January-June of 1964.
Simultaneously it was reported
that 138.000 tourists came to Is-
rael during the first six months of
this year, an increase of 18 per
cent by comparison with the same
