Halpern and Dr. Robert Schlaff, president of Cong. Beth Abraham, have announced the appointment of Rabbi Martin J. Tatlebaum as educational direc- tor of its new Hebrew school open- ing in September. A full program of afternoon He- brew education from kindergarten through Bar Mitzvah, Bat Mitzvah, junior high school and 10th grade consecration will be offered in the synagogue building on Seven Mile Rd. and in the branch school at Kennedy Elementary School in Southfield. For use in preparing blind Jewish youths for their Bar Mitzvah ceremonies, the Jewish Braille Institute of America has published 67 Maftirs in Hebrew and English braille. Practicing with one of them is Jeffrey Bennett of the Bronx, N. Y., and looking on are Mrs. Nathan H. Wadler (center), president of the Women's Branch of the Union of Orthodox Jewish Congregations of America, and Mrs. Isidor Freedman, chairman of its national braille committee. Cardinal Asserts Bonds With Jews SANTIAGO, Chile (JTA)—Raul Cardinal Silva Henriquez, arch- bishop of Santiago, addressed a capacity audience in the largest synagogue here. He lectured on the theme of "re- spect for the individual in the Old Testament," and asserted that, at this time, on the eve of the fourth session of the Ecumenical Council to be convened at the Vatican in September, the Catholic Church is conscious of the thought that "all men have bonds to the people of God." Considered throughout Latin America as one of the foremost progressives in the Catholic Church, Cardinal Hendriquez thus pointed up his continued inter- est in having the Ecumenical Council adopt definitively the declaration on relations with non-Christians, passed by the Council's last session, last win- ter. That declaration would repudiate once and for all the charges of deicide against the Jewish people, and would denounce anti-Semitism. Cardinal Henriquez cooperated with the late Pope Pohn XXIII in the Vatican's move to absolve the Jews of the deicide accusation.
