35,000 Protestant Leaders in Germany Express Friendship for Jews, Israel COLOGNE (JTA)—One of West Germany's leading Protestant theo- logians, Prof. Helmut Gollwitzer, sharply attacked German Protes- tantism for failing, during the Hitler era, to oppose the "German plan to annihilate the House of Israel and kill its Jews." Addressing the Congress of Churches being held here, with 35,000 lay and clerical delegates representing every Protestant de- nomination and community in the country, Prof. Gollwitzer said: "Not only the German people, but the churches themselves were thoroughly at fault during the time of the Third Reich. Neither the Protestant churches, nor the people, openly expressed their solidarity with the Jewish people. God Himself will forever be disgusted with the Christians, should they tolerate another Jewish massacre." Other delegates and guest speak- ers criticized German industry and the German government for not being sufficiently interested in strengthening Israel's economy. Dr. Christoph Freiherr von Im- hoff, a theologian from Dusseldorf, criticized the government's Middle East policy, saying: "We deliver arms to one party or the other party. This is not the way for Ger- many to develop its prestige. The real 'German policy should consist of actively helping Israel's econo- mic development." The congress is the largest Pro- testant gathering held in this country since the war. The prosecutor said that a jailer assigned to watch the sus- pect through a peephole saw the suicide attempt and called for help to take the youth to the hospital. His father, who died last year, had been a member of the SS, Hitler's elite guard. Various traces Woitzik had left at the scenes of his swastika daub- ings, including fingerprints and shoeprints, led investigators to the home of Woitzik's mother, where he was apprehended. The local po lice chief said: "We hope the matter is ended now." He added, however, that there are still suspicions that Woitzik may have been aided by others, and the probe of the existence of a possible, broader anti- Semitic group is still continuing. Police said they found at Woit- zik's home portraits of Hitler, clipped from a book about Nazism, slogans like "Hitler Was Right," which had appeared alongside many of the swastikas and other pro-Nazi materials. The Bamberg incidents touched off a spate of similar swastika-daubings in vari- ous parts of West Germany. One of the problems facing in- vestigators now is to determine whether the manifestations outside Bamberg had been stimulated by the acts in Bamberg, or may have been carried out by a group linked in some way to Woitzik. The swastika plague started on the night of June 13, when several of the smearings of the Nazi symbol were found in Bamberg. The next day, it was discovered that 23 tombstones in the Jewish cemetery here had been engraved with the swastika and overturned. These incidents were con- sidered so grave that Chancellor Ludwig Erhard came here to deliver an address denouncing the resurgence of anti-Semitism. A large mass meeting, addressed by the mayor, was held at the Jewish cemetery, condemning anti-Semitism. Residents of Bamberg, where there are very few Jews, posted a $5,000 reward for the capture of the anti-Semites responsible. The city has voted to pay the cost of repairing the Jewish cemetery, ex- pected to total about $5,000. Neo-Nazis Marched Out of Park Before Parade for the entire family ., Protestants and other religious circles in this country are among the staunchest friends of Israel and of the Jewish people in general. Lorenz Cardinal Jaeger, arch- bishop of Paderborn, predicted that the fourth session of the Ecumenical Council would give final approval to the draft dec- laration on Catholic-Jewish rela- tions. The draft, which repudiates the ancient charge of deicide against the Jewish people past and present in connection with the crucifixion of Jesus, received overwhelming provisional approval at the third session. Cardinal Jaeger declared, amid applause. that "the Church will speak the truth, in spite of the opposition in the Middle East and 6-7555 TORONTO (JTA) — Eight ad- herents of the Canadian Nazi Par- ty, led by their self-tyled com- manders, John Beattie and D. Stanley, were arrested after they tried to stage a demonstration in a public park. The group entered the city park, Allen Gardens, and unfurled a banner bearing the swastika. They paraded only about 50 yards when several men snatched the Nazi banner from them and trampled it. The Nazis started to run, but were rounded up by the police. They were charged with unlawful as- sembly and released on bail. No Russ at Maccabiah BY JESSE SILVER regardless of possible losses." Foes of the present strong version of the draft include Catholic prelates in Moslem countries. Cardinal Jaeger was among the prelates who fought efforts to dilute the draft. He is now in charge of Catholic contacts with Protestants in West Germany. The Catholic Church's provi- sional Declaration on Relations with Non-Christians, which in- cludes the clauses dealing with the Jewish people, is due to come be- fore the next session of the Ecu- menical Council, opening Sept. 14, for final action. "We must try to find a common language with our Jewish broth- ers," said the president of the con- gress, Richard von Weizacker. The chairman of a "working party" that prepared the session on rela- tions with the Jewish people, Prof. Helmut Gollwitzer, told the session: "The very existence of Israel is proof of the existence of wonders." Prof. Hans Joachim Kraus of Hamburg, one of Germany's lead- ing theologians, said "Israel is the people of God. It is proof of God's will." Prof. Ernest Simon of the He- brew University, in Jerusalem, a guest participant, told the congress that Germany's principal "act of reparation" to the Jewish people could be an effort by Germany to bring peace between Israel and the Arab states. Germany, he said, could "work for peace, could adopt a policy which will make peace be- tween Israel and its neighbors possible one day." (Copyright, 1965, JTA, Inc.) There will be no Russian ath- letes at this year's Maccabiah Games in Israel. The National Soviet Sports Fed- eration has turned clown a request from the International Maccabian Games Committee for leading Rus- sian athletes to appear in exhibition or invitation events at the seventh Maccabiah. The Russians have games. The announcement was made at a meeting of world Mac- cabi leaders in Tel Aviv. The com- mittee is still awaiting an answer from the Polish Sports Federation, which has also been asked to send leading athletes to the games. It is expected that 1,300 athletes from 30 nations will take part. The British plan to send a team of '70 men and women. Tolerance is the only real test of civilization.Arthur Helps.
